May Traditions on the Schlei
Rügge is a small municipality in the Süderbrarup office, district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — located on the Angeln peninsula between the Schlei fjord and the Baltic Sea. Like many villages in Angeln, Rügge upholds the Maypole tradition: raising a decorated birch tree on May 1st as a symbol of spring and community cohesion.

On May 1st, 2026, the municipality of Rügge invites you from 11:00 AM to the traditional Maibaumfest at the Bondeflöh village pond. The Rügge Volunteer Fire Brigade will provide culinary delights with bratwurst and a delicious roast pork with crackling from the grill.
The festival is a classic May 1st event for villagers and guests from neighboring communities — and follows the tradition of North German May celebrations with a Maypole, spring flowers, and long outdoor tables.

By car via the B201 or B199 between Schleswig and Kappeln, then turn off to Rügge. Parking available in the village. By train to Süderbrarup, then continue by bus or car.
