May Traditions on the Schlei

Rügge is a small municipality in the Süderbrarup office, district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — located on the Angeln peninsula between the Schlei fjord and the Baltic Sea. Like many villages in Angeln, Rügge upholds the Maypole tradition: raising a decorated birch tree on May 1st as a symbol of spring and community cohesion.

What to Expect

The Maibaumfest begins at 11 AM and follows the classic schedule:

• Maypole Raising at the Bondeflöh village pond — jointly by the village community and the fire brigade
• Barbecue Buffet with bratwurst and roast pork with crackling — the Rügge Volunteer Fire Brigade provides the catering
• Social Gathering around the village pond
• May Celebration Atmosphere with spring flowers, a decorated tree, and Maypole dancing (if weather permits)

In Schleswig-Holstein, the Maypole raising is part of village life, without excessive folklore, unlike in Bavaria where the Maypole is often the central focus. The charm of the Rügge festival lies in its simplicity: a village, a pond, a Maypole, a buffet — and time to converse.
