Low German Theatre, Raffle and Dancing at the Inn — Tradition on the Third Saturday in February
When February in the north of Schleswig-Holstein is usually wet, cold, and grey, the Norderbrarup Volunteer Fire Brigade provides a vibrant antidote with its Feuerwehrfest: a whole Saturday evening of conviviality at the inn, with a fixed program that has hardly changed for decades.
The traditional start at 7:00 PM is a Low German play by the Mohrkircher Theaterspeelers, the well-known amateur theatre group from the neighbouring village of Mohrkirch. They perform classic Low German comedies (one-act plays, 45–60 minutes long) revolving around love, hardship, and misunderstandings in North German village life — cheerful, hearty, and full of linguistic wit. The Mohrkirch group is considered a staple of the Low German theatre scene and regularly performs at the fire brigade festivals in Saustrup, Norderbrarup, Sörup, and Mohrkirch. Since 2018, Low German theatre has been a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Following the play is the fire brigade's grand raffle — the proceeds go towards youth work and equipping the brigade. The evening concludes with a dance evening with a live band or DJ, often lasting until the early hours.
Norderbrarup is a municipality with around 600 inhabitants in the Amt Süderbrarup, Schleswig-Flensburg district, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The region between the Schlei fjord and the Baltic Sea is characterised by small villages, thatched-roof farmhouses, and a dense network of clubs and associations — the Volunteer Fire Brigade is not just a safety service but the social backbone of the community.
The date has been announced on the official website of the Norderbrarup Volunteer Fire Brigade and follows the established rhythm of previous years. The main hall of the inn, classic seating arrangement with a stage in front of the dance floor.
The specific play by the Mohrkircher Theaterspeelers will be announced a few weeks before the date — usually a Low German comedy from the group's current repertoire.
Current program and ticket outlets will be published shortly before the date on the website feuerwehr-norderbrarup.de.
