Spectacular Athletics Summer 2026 in Bochum-Wattenscheid
Bochum, a major city in the Ruhr area with around 366,000 inhabitants (independent city in the administrative district of Arnsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia), is experiencing an extraordinary athletics summer in July 2026. The German Athletics Federation (DLV) has awarded all three national championships to the Lohrheidestadion in Bochum-Wattenscheid — on three consecutive July weekends:
- U18/U23 Championships: July 3-5, 2026
- U16/U20 Championships: July 10-12, 2026
- Senior Championships (Women and Men): July 25-26, 2026
This is a unique concentration of events in a single stadium, making Bochum-Wattenscheid the main stage for German athletics in July 2026. The organizer is the DLV in cooperation with TV Wattenscheid 01 (one of Germany's most traditional athletics clubs) and the City of Bochum.
DM U16/U20 — July 10-12, 2026
The middle of the three championships — the U16/U20 DM from July 10 to 12, 2026 — is the youth stage of German athletics. Here, the best sprinters, jumpers, throwers, and runners in the under-16 and under-20 age groups compete for the German championship titles. U20 athletes can simultaneously qualify for the Junior World Championships in Eugene (USA, August 5-9, 2026) — an important national qualifying event.
Lohrheidestadion — Jewel of Athletics
The Lohrheidestadion in Bochum-Wattenscheid reopened in summer 2025 after a two-year modernization. With a capacity of around 15,000 spectators, a new Mondo track (the most modern track system in competitive athletics), new jumping and throwing sectors, and a completely renovated grandstand system, it has been considered a "jewel for athletics" since its reopening. The facility belongs to the sports club TV Wattenscheid 01, which represents the Olympic tradition of German athletics (including Heinrich Popow, Norbert Stein, Heike Drechsler).
Three Days of Competition Marathon
The program for the U16/U20 DM spans three days: Friday, July 10, 2026, with preliminary rounds, combined events, and first finals; Saturday, July 11, 2026, as the main visitor day with numerous finals; Sunday, July 12, 2026, with the last finals and award ceremonies. A detailed hourly schedule will be published by the DLV in early summer 2026 on leichtathletik.de.
Disciplines and Tickets
All Olympic athletics disciplines will be held: sprints (100/200/400 m), hurdles, middle and long-distance (800/1500/3000/5000 m), relays, long jump/high jump/triple jump/pole vault, shot put/discus/javelin/hammer throw, decathlon (U20 male) / heptathlon (U20 female) / combined events. Tickets are available in the DLV Shop at ticket-onlineshop.com/ols/dlv — affordably priced (typically 5-15 EUR per day, weekend pass from 20 EUR).
Bochum-Wattenscheid as an Athletics Hub
Wattenscheid has been one of Germany's most important athletics centers since the 1960s. TV Wattenscheid 01 has produced numerous Olympic, World, and European champions over the decades — its talent development programs are among the best in Europe. Awarding the national championships to Wattenscheid in 2026 honors this tradition and makes optimal use of the modernized facility.
