Traditional Easter Fire of the Volunteer Fire Brigade
The Easter fire is one of the oldest and most widespread spring customs in Northern Germany. Originally likely originating from pre-Christian purification rituals to bid farewell to winter, it was linked to Easter in the Christian calendar and is now maintained in almost every village community in Schleswig-Holstein. The fire symbolizes the driving away of winter and the beginning of the bright season.
In Norderbrarup, a community of around 1,000 inhabitants in the Amt Mittelangeln district of Schleswig-Flensburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Volunteer Fire Brigade is the organizer. The FFW was founded in 1932, currently has 65 active members and two emergency vehicles. It acts as a preserver of local traditions — and the Easter fire, alongside other community events, is one of its most important contributions to village life.
The venue is Hennings Koppel, a meadow on the outskirts of the village, owned by the Hennings family and made available to the fire brigade for the annual Easter fire. During the day, the fire is built with wood and brushwood from the village — many citizens bring cuttings from their gardens, combining tradition and practical use. On Saturday evening, the fire is lit.
The Easter fire is explicitly 'a community event for the whole family', as the FFW puts it. The fire brigade provides sausages from the grill, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks, and punch for the cooler hours. In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Easter fire of the FFW Norderbrarup exemplifies how village traditions are kept alive today: through voluntary commitment, through the connection of generations, through the awareness that tradition needs care.
As every year, the Volunteer Fire Brigade Norderbrarup is organizing the Easter fire on Easter Saturday. In 2026, the fire will be lit on Saturday, April 4th, at Hennings Koppel — the event opens at 6:00 PM.
