Classical Music Under the Open Sky
"SR Klassik am See" is one of the most spectacular open-air classical music events in Saarland. The organizers are the Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR) together with Musik und Theater Saar GmbH, and the artistic director is the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern — the SR's own symphony orchestra.
Venue: Losheim Reservoir
The venue is the Losheim Reservoir in the Merzig-Wadern district — a 73-hectare body of water in the heart of Saarland's Hochwald region, near the tri-border area of Germany, Luxembourg, and France. The gently sloping shore provides a relaxed open-air atmosphere with excellent views of the stage and water. As the sun sets, it creates moods that no concert hall can offer.
Patrick Lange at the Podium
In 2026, Patrick Lange, one of the most sought-after German conductors of his generation internationally, will be conducting. Lange is the General Music Director in Wiesbaden and regularly performs at the Berlin State Opera, in Munich, and Vienna. His commitment to the Klassik am See concert is a remarkable upgrade to the format.
Eva Zalenga and Benjamin Bruns
The soloists announced are Eva Zalenga (soprano) and Benjamin Bruns (tenor). Zalenga is well-known in Saarland (see Musikfestspiele Saar), and Bruns is internationally sought-after as a lyric tenor (Vienna State Opera, Bayreuth Festival). Roland Kunz will moderate.
"Encore!" — The Motto for 2026
The motto "Encore!" promises a best-of program: those pieces that are regularly performed as encores at classical concerts or should be. The program includes works by Johann Strauss, Antonín Dvořák, Gioachino Rossini, Giacomo Puccini, Georges Bizet, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edward Elgar, and Leonard Bernstein. A program to hum along to, perfect for a summer evening atmosphere by the lake.
Tradition Since 2018
The Klassik am See concert has been organized by SR since 2018, initially sporadically, and established as an annual event since 2022. It is part of SR's strategy to bring classical music out of the studio and into the region — a media policy model that receives attention nationwide.
