Culture in the Old Town – All Year Round
With reihenweise, the Lutherstadt Wittenberg Marketing GmbH has created a series that enlivens the city throughout the year. The concept is cleverly differentiated: in spring and summer, there are open stages – a mobile stage set up at various locations in the Old Town, with free admission and a diverse selection of genres. In autumn and winter, curated indoor formats take over in the city's established venues, often requiring tickets.
In 2026, the series kicks off on May 21st with an open-stage evening in the indie, folk, and soul genres. This will be followed on July 16th by a jazz concert with the duo Dominik Gershkovich & Emil Wahlgren, on August 6th by the next open stage, and in September by the Oktoberfestchen (little Oktoberfest) on the market square with the Boßdorf brass band, plus the White Picnic, the Tanzschmiede (dance workshop), and a comedy evening with Olaf Bossi.
Lutherstadt Wittenberg is the district town of Wittenberg District in the state of Saxony-Anhalt – the UNESCO World Heritage city where Martin Luther published his 95 Theses in 1517. reihenweise explicitly aims not to be a grand tourist spectacle, but a local and regional offering: small stages, charming squares, often free, always connected to the city.
The venues vary: Market Square with the Town Hall and St. Mary's Church, Castle Square in front of the Castle Church (Reformation site), Cranach Courtyard, Luther House Forecourt, and the Stadthaus for indoor formats. The weather god, of course, plays along – in case of rain, the open stages sometimes move indoors.
