Upper Bavarian Spring Volksfest in the Chiemgau
The Traunstein Spring Festival is one of the most famous Volksfests in the Chiemgau and, with ten festival days, a marquee, amusement rides, and the Almstadl, ranks among the larger Volksfests in Upper Bavaria east of Munich. The venue is the Festplatz an der Siegsdorfer Straße (festival grounds on Siegsdorfer Street) in Traunstein. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Traunstein GmbH, which conceptualizes the Spring Festival as the annual season opener for the Upper Bavarian Volksfest calendar.
The central element is the large festival marquee – open daily from 11 a.m., from 4 p.m. on opening day – with live music from regional bands, brass bands, and traditional folk music ensembles. In addition, there is the Almstadl, open from 5 p.m., offering a smaller, more rustic atmosphere and Alpine music. The amusement rides and attractions open on weekdays from 1:30 p.m., on Family Day from 12 p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m.
Two days stand out in the festival calendar: On Sunday, May 10, 2026, the grand parade will march through Traunstein to the festival grounds – featuring music bands, traditional costume groups, floats, and showmen. Family Day takes place on Monday, May 11, 2026: reduced prices at the amusement rides, earlier opening hours for the attractions, and a special family program.
Traunstein is the district capital of the Traunstein district in southeastern Upper Bavaria, centrally located in the Chiemgau region between Chiemsee lake and Salzburg. The town is known for its historic Georgi-Ritt on Easter Monday with sword dance, for its salt trading history, and for a particularly dense culture of Volksfests and traditions. Alongside the Traunstein Volksfest in summer, the Spring Festival is one of the city's two major festivals.
The Traunstein Spring Festival 2026 will be held from Friday, May 8, to Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Festplatz Siegsdorfer Straße. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Traunstein GmbH.
Ten days of Volksfest activities will be offered, featuring a festival marquee, Almstadl, live music by regional bands, brass bands, and traditional ensembles, as well as a wide array of amusement rides. Highlights include the grand parade through Traunstein on Sunday, May 10, and Family Day on Monday, May 11.
