Traditional autumn market and flea market on Blattl-Sonntag in Traunstein's Old Town
The „Blattl-Sonntag“ is a traditional Traunstein term for the last Sunday with open shops in October — an old designation that, in the Upper Bavarian dialect, thematizes the autumn mood and falling leaves. The market on Blattl-Sonntag combines a classic town festival market with a large flea market, making the day one of the busiest Sundays in Traunstein's autumn.
Around 50–80 stalls are set up on Traunstein's central town square, with a clear focus on clothing, household goods, jewelry, and food. This distinguishes the autumn market from purely food markets and offers a broader range of goods. Many stalls are operated by regional artisans and producers from the Chiemgau and Berchtesgadener Land regions.
In parallel, a large flea market takes place from 8 AM in the upper Bahnhofstraße, Marienstraße, and at Maxplatz. Private individuals, clubs, and schools sell used goods — from furniture to books, clothing, vinyl records, and bric-a-brac. The flea market is significantly larger than the simultaneous town square market and attracts visitors from the entire Traunstein district and Berchtesgadener Land.
Traunstein retailers are permitted to open their stores on Blattl-Sonntag from 12 PM to 5 PM — one of the few Sundays with open shops in Bavaria that are officially approved. Thus, the day is also of central economic importance for the city center.
Traunstein is the district town of the district of the same name in Traunstein, located in the Chiemgau region, on the edge of the Bavarian Prealps. With around 21,000 inhabitants, it is one of the central medium-sized towns in Upper Bavaria, southeast of Munich. The historic town square with the baroque town hall and the burgher houses forms an attractive market backdrop.
The date October 25, 2026, is officially confirmed by the City of Traunstein. The organizer is the city itself.
The format with a curated town square market on one hand and a large flea market in the pedestrian zone on the other has been established for years and regularly brings several thousand visitors to Traunstein's Old Town. The simultaneous Sunday with open shops makes the day one of the most important downtown events of the Traunstein year.
