Advent Magic in the Chiemgau
The Traunstein Christmas Market is one of the most traditional Christmas markets in the southeastern Bavarian Chiemgau region and in the Traunstein district. From November 27th to December 24th, 2026, the historic town square in the old town, located between St. Oswald's Parish Church and the distinctive Jacklturm tower, will be transformed into a festive Advent landscape with wooden stalls, fairy lights, and fir trees. The town of Traunstein, a former salt trading town and now a gateway to Salzburg, offers an extraordinary backdrop with its Baroque-historic architecture in the state of Bavaria.
Opening on November 27th
The grand opening will take place on Thursday, November 27th, 2026, starting at 5 PM. The first market day will offer special Advent splendor until 9 PM with an opening program by the city of Traunstein and a welcome address by the mayor. From the following day onwards, the market will operate on its regular schedule: daily from 11 AM, with extended opening hours on Advent weekends until 10 PM (selected stalls). On Christmas Eve, December 24th, 2026, the market will traditionally close at 1 PM.
Carousel, Puppet Theatre, and Delicacies
In addition to the characteristic wooden stalls offering Christmas tree decorations, handmade crafts, nativity figures, and regional delicacies, the market features a historic carousel for children and a puppet theatre with classic Christmas plays. Culinary delights are dominated by Chiemgau specialties — mulled wine, bratwurst, Kasspatzen, Kiachl, roasted almonds, and Alpine delicacies. The Advent weekends will bring accompanying stage programs with brass ensembles, choirs, and children's choirs from the region.
Traunstein — Gateway to the Chiemgau
Traunstein, with around 21,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Traunstein district and is considered the gateway to the southeastern Bavarian Chiemgau region. The historic old town with its Baroque town square, St. Oswald's Parish Church (Gothic hall church), and the Jacklturm (medieval town gate) provides the ideal setting for a traditional Christmas market. Traunstein is also known for its Georgiritt (St. George's Ride) and the Traunstein Spring Festival — the Christmas market completes the year-round event program.
