One of the largest and most beautiful pottery markets in Central Germany
Lutherstadt Wittenberg is part of the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt and, together with Eisleben, is a joint UNESCO World Heritage site "Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg". The market square in the historic center—with the Renaissance Town Hall, Luther and Melanchthon monuments, and St. Mary's Church, the pulpit of Martin Luther—provides an unusual setting for a pottery market: no festival tent meadow, no industrial wasteland, but a place where the Reformation began.
The Wittenberg Pottery Market has long been considered one of the largest and highest quality central markets for ceramics in Central Germany—the tourist information office of Lutherstadt explicitly points this out. Workshops from all over Germany travel here. What distinguishes the market from other large pottery markets is the visibility of the work: Many potters have their potter's wheel right at their stand. Those interested can watch a bowl being made from a lump of clay and chat with the craftspeople.
The pottery market takes place every year on the last weekend of September. Lutherstadt Wittenberg Marketing GmbH organizes the event in coordination with the participating workshops. Applications for stand spaces open each spring and are decided based on assortment quality and variety—hence the high selection of workshops.
Wittenberg is located in the north of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, on the Berlin–Leipzig railway line. Visitors to the pottery market often combine it with a Reformation tour of the Luther sites (Castle Church, Luther House, Melanchthon House) or a trip to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage site, the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz.
Stalls will be set up on the market square and in the surrounding streets. Lutherstadt Wittenberg Marketing GmbH ensures that only professional ceramic workshops participate—plastic imitations or pure resellers are excluded. The range includes functional ceramics, studio pieces, large formats, jewelry, and experimental works.
The complete list of workshops and exhibitors will be published by Lutherstadt Wittenberg Marketing GmbH starting summer 2026 at lutherstadt-wittenberg.de.
Lutherstadt Wittenberg main station: ICE stop on the Berlin–Munich line. Approx. 20 minutes on foot or by city bus from the station to the market square. Parking on the outskirts with shuttle service recommended, as the city center gets very crowded on market weekends.
