Historic Market and Procession of Lights at the Original Site of the 95 Theses
According to tradition, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses against the sale of indulgences to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. What began as a theological notice became the trigger for the Reformation and changed Europe. Today, more than five hundred years later, Lutherstadt Wittenberg celebrates this day every year as the Reformation Day festival. Reformation Day is a public holiday in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, and no place commemorates it more worthily and atmospherically than Wittenberg itself.
During the day, the old town transforms into a historic market: Craftsmen, musicians, sutlers, and jugglers bring the Schlossstraße between the Town Church and the Castle Church to life. You'll find medieval crafts, Renaissance music, and food and drinks based on historical recipes. The highlight is the Procession of Lights starting at 5 p.m.: Wittenberg citizens, guests, and historical associations walk with lanterns from the Luther House through the city to the Castle Meadow — a symbol of hope, community, and renewal.
A special feature of recent editions: the Wittenberg Sound Theses at Bunker Hill. Citizens of the town read Luther's 95 Theses, and the recordings are broadcast acoustically — history becomes audible. In addition, festive services and organ concerts take place in the Town Church of St. Mary (Luther's preaching church) and in the Castle Church.
The Castle Church and Luther House are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Luther Memorials. The Wittenberg district is considered one of the most important Reformation centers worldwide, and the city is a destination for pilgrims of Protestant Christians from all continents. Anyone who comes to Wittenberg on October 31 experiences a rare combination of historical site, living tradition, and lived theology — worth seeing even for those not of a religious persuasion.
