Summer highlight on the castle meadow of the Luther City
For four days in midsummer, the Schlosswiese in Lutherstadt Wittenberg becomes the largest wine garden in Saxony-Anhalt. The Wittenberger Weinfest brings together winemakers from Germany's important wine regions — from the local Saale-Unstrut to Saxony, and on to Rhineland-Palatinate and Franconia. The venue is the large meadow below Wittenberg Castle and the world-famous Castle Church, at whose door Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses in 1517.
At several dozen stands, you can taste wines by the glass — Riesling, Silvaner, Weissburgunder, Spätburgunder, Sekt (sparkling wine), and regional specialties. Accompanied by culinary delights: Flammkuchen, cheese, tapas, bread, and olive oil. Bands play on stage across various genres — Jazz, Pop, Funk, Rock. Dancing until 1:00 AM on several evenings. Families will find a relaxed setting during the day; in the evenings, the festival turns into a big open-air party.
Germany's northernmost wine-growing region, Saale-Unstrut, is only about 100 kilometers southwest of Wittenberg. With the Wittenberger Weinfest, the city's trade association brings this and other wine cultures to the state of Saxony-Anhalt — creating a contrast to the image of the Luther City as a place of Reformation and UNESCO World Heritage. In fact, the festival has been one of the city's most visited summer events for years and is an integral part of the SommerKultWochen (Summer Culture Weeks).
Wittenberg is the district town of the Wittenberg district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt — one of the three German UNESCO World Heritage Luther sites (along with Eisleben). The Castle Church, St. Mary's Town Church, and the Luther House are world-famous. The Weinfest offers an elegant opportunity to get to know the city in the summer — a city stroll during the day, a wine evening on the castle meadow.
The 2026 edition of the Wittenberger Weinfest takes place from Thursday, July 23 to Sunday, July 26, 2026, on the Schlosswiese. The trade association of Lutherstadt Wittenberg once again brings together winemakers from Saale-Unstrut, Saxony, Mosel, Pfalz, and other German growing regions. A detailed daily program and the list of bands will be published in spring 2026 on the website of the Luther City.
Detailed program and bands will be communicated by the trade association of Lutherstadt Wittenberg on lutherstadt-wittenberg.de before the festival.
