Advent in the City of Luther

The Wittenberg Christmas Market is more than just a market stall event: it takes over the UNESCO World Heritage old town of Wittenberg in several formats, offering distinct spatial and atmospheric experiences. The main market with its classic wooden stalls is located on the historic market square in front of the town hall and St. Mary's Church. Here you'll find mulled wine, bratwurst, handicrafts, Advent decorations, and a stage program on weekends.

In parallel, the Market of Beautiful Things opens in the Cranach Courtyards (Schlossstraße 1) on the first Advent weekend. Over 40 artists and craftspeople from all over Germany showcase their handmade pieces for three days – one of the highest-quality Advent markets in Saxony-Anhalt. The Cranach Courtyards themselves, with their Renaissance courtyard, were the former residence and workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son.

A third venue is the Christmas Market of Associations at the church square in front of St. Mary's Church. Here, associations, schools, and non-profit initiatives sell their products, accompanied by dance groups, music, and a visit from St. Nicholas. Plus, Advent at the Luther House, where the Luther House, with its historical collection, offers extended opening hours during the Advent season.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg is located in the Wittenberg district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, about 100 kilometers southwest of Berlin and 70 kilometers northeast of Leipzig. The city is the setting for Martin Luther's Reformation – the posting of the 95 Theses in 1517 took place at the Castle Church. The entire historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.
