Harvest Thanksgiving in the village center of the East Frisian municipality of Werdum
Werdum is located in the heart of the East Frisian marshland, a landscape historically shaped by agriculture, livestock farming, and fishing. The Harvest Festival is therefore more than just a folkloric spectacle: it is an expression of a real, still vibrant connection between the village and the land, between family and the fields. The date in early October marks the transition to the quieter season and offers an opportunity to look back together and give thanks.
The festive opening is traditionally marked by a harvest thanksgiving service in Werdum Church – one of the oldest churches in East Frisia. The harvest crown, woven from grain, fruit, vegetables, and flowers by helpers, hangs centrally in the church and symbolically represents this year's harvest. Afterwards, the festival moves to the village center, where clubs and vendors have set up their stalls.
The festival mile features East Frisian specialties – fish, Mettwurst (a type of sausage), cakes, tea with rock candy and cream – regional products directly from the farm, handicrafts, and sweet stalls. For children, there are small hands-on activities, often a bouncy castle and games related to the harvest theme. The program is accessible and explicitly family-friendly.
The Harvest Festival concludes the Werdum festival calendar for 2026 – following the Pentecost concert, Petting Zoo Festival, Street Festival, and Chieftain Festival. It thus fulfills a dual function: it is both a traditional harvest thanksgiving festival and an annual reunion occasion for the entire village community.
In 2026, the Harvest Festival again combines a church service and market activities. The harvest crown in the church, the stalls in the village center, and the family-friendly offerings form the classic triad of East Frisian harvest thanksgiving festivals.
In a region shaped by agriculture, the Harvest Festival is more than folklore. It is a moment of collective gratitude and a commitment to the agricultural roots of the marshland.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the municipality of Werdum and the church community in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
