Schlieben — 1070 Years of Town History
Schlieben in the Elbe-Elster district is a small town in southern Brandenburg — at the transition between Lower Lusatia and the Schraden region. With its first documented existence over a thousand years ago, the town will celebrate its 1070th anniversary in 2026. The Moienmarkt — the traditional town market — will be staged as a grand festival weekend with a historical focus on this occasion.
Historical Market in the Town Centre
Over three days, market stalls in historical costumes will spread across the market square and adjacent streets. Craft demonstrations — blacksmithing, pottery, weaving, basket weaving, woodworking — provide insights into the everyday art of the Middle Ages and early modern period. During the day, market activities set the atmosphere; in the evening, it shifts to campfires, music, and performances.
1070th Anniversary as a Festival Spectacle
The 1070th anniversary will strongly shape the 2026 edition: parades in historical costumes, city tours focusing on the town's oldest history, a ceremonial act at the town hall, special exhibitions at the local history museum, and a music program spanning several centuries — from medieval chants to contemporary folk bands.
Live Music and Camp Life
Live music alternates between medieval music (bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, shawm, drums), folk, and cover bands. Several camps around the market square recreate past life — from knights' tents to craft workshops and taverns. Families will find a dedicated children's program with archery, hands-on activities, and storytelling.
Entry in the 2026 Cultural Calendar

The event is organized by the town of Schlieben together with the Amt Schlieben and local associations. Current information is available on the town's website and its Instagram presence @schliebener_moienmarkt.
