Schlieben is located in southwestern Brandenburg, in a climatic zone where viticulture was historically possible — and is again today. The Schlieben wine-growing region is among the northernmost in Germany and produces its own grapes, from which local wine and, in autumn, fresh Federweißer are made. It is precisely this tradition that the Kellerstraßenfest celebrates annually on October 3 — German Unity Day — in Schlieben's Kellerstraße.

While other cities hold official ceremonies on this national holiday, Schlieben takes a different approach: The town transforms the Kellerstraße into an open-air wine mile. The Schlieben Winegrowers' Association opens its cellars, local restaurateurs set up stalls, the town musicians play — and the entire region gathers in the town center.
