Wine, Federweißer, and Unity atmosphere in the northernmost wine-growing region
Schlieben is located in southwestern Brandenburg, in a climatic zone where viticulture was historically possible — and is again today. The Schlieben wine-growing region is among the northernmost in Germany and produces its own grapes, from which local wine and, in autumn, fresh Federweißer are made. It is precisely this tradition that the Kellerstraßenfest celebrates annually on October 3 — German Unity Day — in Schlieben's Kellerstraße.
While other cities hold official ceremonies on this national holiday, Schlieben takes a different approach: The town transforms the Kellerstraße into an open-air wine mile. The Schlieben Winegrowers' Association opens its cellars, local restaurateurs set up stalls, the town musicians play — and the entire region gathers in the town center. It's a relaxed, deeply regional way to celebrate the German national holiday.
Schlieben belongs to the Elbe-Elster district in Lower Lusatia. Viticulture in the region dates back to the Middle Ages and, after decades of interruption, has been revived in recent years. Local amateur and professional winemakers today cultivate several hectares of vineyards. The annual Kellerstraßenfest is the most important stage on which this wine finds its audience.
For those who don't want to spend German Unity Day in the capital, Schlieben offers a true contrast: no speeches, no big stage, but a glass of Federweißer in hand, accordion music in the background, and the feeling of experiencing something truly regional.
The Schliebener Kellerstraßenfest 2026 starts on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Kellerstraße. The organizer is the Schlieben Winegrowers' Association in cooperation with local restaurateurs and the Schlieben municipality.
The focus is on Schlieben wines and Federweißer from Germany's northernmost vineyards. Regional dishes are also served — grilled sausages, Schmalzbrot (lard bread), coffee, and cake. The historical cellars are open, the town musicians play, and there are pony rides and activity stands for children.
Detailed program will be published in late summer 2026 by the Schlieben municipality at amt-schlieben.de.
