Traditional village festival with boat rides on the village pond
The Werchau Village Festival with Pond Boating is a prime example of the vibrant village culture in the Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg. Werchau is a district of the town of Schlieben in the so-called Schliebener Land – a rural area between the Lausitz and Fläming regions, characterized by forests, meadows, and small villages.
The festival's namesake tradition is the 'Teichfahren': boats, rafts, or simple paddle boats are navigated on the Werchau village pond. Sometimes as a competition, sometimes as convivial entertainment – the pond boating brings generations together and is a lovingly maintained piece of Brandenburg village tradition.
The festival traditionally begins on Friday evening with the official opening at 7 PM, followed by music, dancing, and social gathering. On Saturday, the program expands to include games for children, the pond boating, and an evening festival program. Werchau thus maintains a format that, in its simplicity, contributes to the charm of the Schliebener Land.
The town of Schlieben and its districts together form one of the traditional rural areas in the Elbe-Elster district. In the Schliebener Land, you can explore Baroque village churches, old post mill windmills (like in Lebusa), and small family farms. The Werchau village festival is one of the numerous village festivals listed annually in the event calendar of the Schlieben administrative district – and a good reason to get to know the tranquility of the southern Brandenburg landscape.
The village festival begins on Friday, June 27th, at 7 PM at the Werchau village pond. The opening speeches will kick things off, followed by the musical evening program.
On Saturday, June 28th, the program extends throughout the day. The highlight is the traditional pond boating on the village pond. Games for children, live music, and regional gastronomy make the festival a convivial weekend for the whole village and all guests from the Schliebener Land.
Free admission.
By car via the B87 to Schlieben and then continue towards the Werchau district. Public transport connections are limited – if arriving without a car, it's best to plan via Falkenberg/Elster or Herzberg (Elster) and use a bus or taxi from there.
Opening Friday, 7 PM. Detailed program will be announced in advance via the Schlieben administrative district and the town of Schlieben.
A hike or bike tour through the Schliebener Land can be well combined with a visit to the festival. The Lebusa post mill from 1686 is worth seeing – Brandenburg's oldest post mill.
