Middle Franconian Kärwa Tradition
Wintersdorf is one of the small districts of Zirndorf in the Middle Franconian district of Fürth (Bavaria). With only a few hundred inhabitants, the village is a prime example of those Franconian villages that keep their Kärwa tradition alive unchanged – year after year.
What Constitutes a Franconian Kärwa
The Franconian Kirchweih (»Kärwa«) follows a fixed ritual: beer tapping in the festival tent on Thursday or Friday, the raising of the Kärwabaum by the »Kärwabuam« (fairground lads) on Saturday afternoon, the festive church service and the traditional Betzentanz (a folk dance) with the wooden Betz as a dance prize on Sunday. In addition, there are candy stalls, a shooting gallery, a swing boat, and a children's carousel – all on a manageable scale, perfect for a village festival.
The Organizer ASV Weinzierlein-Wintersdorf
ASV Weinzierlein-Wintersdorf 1950 e.V. is the sports club covering the two Zirndorf districts of Weinzierlein and Wintersdorf. In addition to football, darts, and gymnastics, the annual Kärwa is one of the most important club activities – and at the same time the most important social event of the village.
Wintersdorf and Zirndorf
Zirndorf itself is known as the toy town (headquarters of the Playmobil manufacturer Brandstätter) and is located directly in the commuter belt of Nuremberg. Wintersdorf, on the other hand, preserves the rural character of the region and is easily accessible by car or bicycle.
