Traditional Höcherbergstadt fair with night-time Mondscheinmarkt
Bexbach proudly bears two nicknames: 'Höcherbergstadt' (High Mountain Town) due to its prominent local mountain, the Höcherberg (391 m), and 'Blumenstadt' (Flower Town) because of its famous flower garden. With just under 17,000 inhabitants, Bexbach is one of the mid-sized towns in the Saarpfalz district — and it celebrates its traditional Kerb (Kirchweih/fair), the Betschbacher Kerb, every year in September on the central Aloys-Nesseler-Platz.
What sets the Betschbacher Kerb apart from many other Saarland fairs is the Mondscheinmarkt on Friday evening. Instead of just a fair focused on rides, Bexbach combines the Volksfest (folk festival) with a high-quality craft market: From 5 PM to 10 PM, exhibitors and craftspeople from Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Lorraine present handmade jewelry, decorations, ceramics, mosaic art, and works in wood, glass, concrete, and metal. Alongside these, there are culinary specialties — from Saarland classics to French crêpes and specialties from the Palatinate region.
The official start to the weekend is traditionally marked by the keg tapping ceremony by Bexbach's mayor, Christian Prech, on Saturday at 6 PM. The fairground remains in full operation until Sunday — with a children's carousel, shooting galleries, game stalls, food and sweet stands, and a stage program featuring local music groups.
To round things off, the traditional Kerb flea market opens its doors on Sunday morning. Private sellers from Bexbach and the surrounding area present bric-a-brac, antiques, collectibles, and vintage items. It's a great opportunity for bargain hunters and a relaxed Sunday morning followed by lunch at the fair.
Bexbach is located in the Saarpfalz district in eastern Saarland, right on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. The town is known for its flower garden, the Bexbach swimming pool, and, of course, its traditional town events — besides the Betschbacher Kerb, also the City Fest in June and the Flower Garden Festival. To truly understand the identity of the Saarpfalz district, one cannot overlook Bexbach.
The city of Bexbach is organizing the Kerb in its usual manner. The Mondscheinmarkt on Friday attracts numerous exhibitors and visitors from Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Lorraine every year. Saturday and Sunday feature children's carousels, shooting galleries, and stage programs for a classic fair atmosphere.
