Folkboat Regatta on the Schlei and State Championship Schleswig-Holstein
Schleswig is the district town of the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein, located on the west bank of the Schlei — Germany's longest fjord (approx. 42 km). With around 25,000 inhabitants and a 1,200-year history (Viking town of Haithabu, bishop's seat, Danish and Prussian rule), Schleswig is one of the most historically significant centers of the state. Gottorf Castle with the State Museums, St. Peter's Cathedral, and the Holm quarter characterize the cityscape — and for centuries, the Schlei has been the central sailing area of the region.
The Folkboat is a 25 sq m International Class keelboat, designed in 1942 by the Swede Tord Sundén, and has a loyal following in Scandinavia and Northern Germany. With a length of just under 7.7 meters, it is a classic daysailer, suitable for regattas as well as weekend cruises. The Folkboat community on the Schlei is one of the most active in Germany.
The Schleipokal is the annual regatta of the Schlei Folkboat community, held every spring at the end of May near Schleswig. 2026 brings a special status: the event will also serve as the State Championship for Folkboats Schleswig-Holstein 2026. This allows boats from outside the Schlei (Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel Fjord) to participate. The Schlei-Segel-Club e.V. — founded in 1903 — is responsible for the organization.
Schleswig has a long maritime tradition. Even in Viking times, Haithabu (on the east bank of the Schlei) was one of the most important trading centers in the Baltic Sea region. Today, the Schlei is a top sailing area for Northern Germany — calm breezes, sheltered bays, and the opportunity for longer trips towards the Baltic Sea. The Schlei-Segel-Club, located at the Schleswig city harbor, has been home to the Schlei Folkboat community for over 120 years.
The Schleipokal 2026 will take place from May 30th to 31st on the Schlei near Schleswig. The organizer is the Schlei-Segel-Club e.V. — the event will also be held in 2026 as the State Championship for Folkboats Schleswig-Holstein 2026. Two days of competition with several races, plus a harbor program at the club. The Schlei Folkboat community welcomes boats from the entire region — from Hamburg, Kiel Fjord, Lübeck, and Scandinavia.
