Grand free street music festival in the Viking city – 10th anniversary edition
Schleswig swingt was launched in 2015 by Schleswig organizer Ingo Harder – with the idea of giving the historic city on the eastern shore of the Schlei a distinct summer city festival that doesn't rely on carnival, folk festivals, or medieval markets, but on contemporary live music of all genres in an open urban setting. The idea caught on – today the festival attracts around 10,000 visitors and is one of the largest free city festivals in the north.
The musical heart consists of three main stages, spread across Capitolplatz, Kornmarkt, and Gallberg. In addition, there is a cabaret stage and a disco bus that rolls mobile between the locations. The setup invites stage-hopping – a concept that consciously distinguishes the festival from classic one-day events. Over 30 bands are on the program each year, supplemented by street musicians at spontaneous locations and dance groups performing choreographies in public spaces.
Schleswig is located on the eastern shore of the Schlei, an unusual freshwater arm of the Baltic Sea that extends over 40 km inland. The city is the district capital of Schleswig-Flensburg, was the site of the Viking trading center Haithabu (UNESCO World Heritage) in the early Middle Ages, and houses one of Northern Germany's most important ecclesiastical buildings, St. Peter's Cathedral. The pedestrian zone, which forms the festival grounds, runs along the historic axis from the cathedral to the city harbor.
A traditional element is the Schleswig fanfare, a marching band with historical identity, which musically opens the festival and parades through the city. The fanfare is the festival's connection to local music culture – a sonic landmark of Schleswig that also accompanies city events outside of the festival.
Like many modern city festivals, Schleswig swingt is completely free. Funding comes from sponsorships (from Schleswig's small and medium-sized businesses to nationwide partners) and food sales. The festival explicitly positions itself as a community festival: accessible to everyone, without social barriers.
Since its founding in 2015, Schleswig swingt has become one of the most important city festivals in Schleswig-Holstein. The 10th edition in 2026 will be celebrated with special program quality – the organizing team around Ingo Harder has announced an expanded artist lineup, which will be gradually released in the weeks before the event on schleswigswingt.com.
Over three days, performances will take place simultaneously on three main stages: Stoll-Haus-Bühne at Capitolplatz, stages at Kornmarkt, and Gallberg. In addition, there is the cabaret stage (comedy, improvisation, acoustic) and the mobile disco bus, which rolls between the locations and ensures continuous live music presence throughout the pedestrian zone.
Specific bands and set times will be published in the weeks before the festival on schleswigswingt.com.
Admission to all stages and program items is free. Food and drinks are available at stalls along the festival route as well as in the cafés and restaurants of the Schleswig pedestrian zone.
By train: Schleswig main train station, then a 10-minute walk to the pedestrian zone. By car: A7 (Hamburg-Flensburg border), exit Schleswig/Schuby. Parking is available on the outskirts of town, as the city center is partially closed during the festival.
Admission to all stages is free. Food and drinks are available at stalls along the festival route as well as in the cafés and restaurants of the pedestrian zone.
