Middle-distance triathlon in the Viking city — DTU German Championship 2026
The Viking Triathlon Schleswig combines demanding endurance sports with the unique backdrop of a historic city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Located in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, Schleswig looks back on a Viking past: just a few kilometers away is Haithabu, one of Northern Europe's most important Viking settlements and part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2018. This historical background is reflected in the event's name, logo, and overall communication.
The 5th edition on June 21, 2026, will be held as the DTU German Championship Middle Distance Triathlon — a special honor for the still young event. The course follows a classic middle-distance format:
The competition is organized by Sub4 Sportevents UG with managing directors Leon Schönknecht, Martin Müller, and Timo Petersen. Since its first edition in 2022, the Viking Triathlon has become a firm fixture in the middle-distance calendar and has reached a career highlight with the DTU championship allocation for 2026.
Athletes and companions arriving in Schleswig will find not only a competition city but also a wealth of culture: the Haithabu Viking Museum, Gottorf Castle with the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum, St. Petri Cathedral, and the old town along the Schlei. The Schlei itself — Germany's longest fjord — provides the setting for the event and makes the competition weekend more than just a sports weekend for many.
With its 5th edition, the Viking Triathlon Schleswig 2026 reaches a sporting milestone: The German Triathlon Union (DTU) has awarded the competition the status of German Championship Middle Distance 2026. Thus, the fastest German middle-distance athletes will compete in Schleswig on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The sporting format remains the proven one: 1.9 km swimming in the Schlei, 90 km cycling on a fast out-and-back course along the B76, and a final half-marathon (21.1 km) over three loops through Schleswig's old town, past Gottorf Castle and the Schlei riverbank. The open-water swim in the Schlei and the cultural-historical course are among the trademarks of the competition.
Exact start times and wave starts will be announced in the athlete briefing shortly before the race. The DTU German Championship Middle Distance 2026 will also bring elite athletes with their own professional start into the field. Program and live tracking at viking-triathlon.de.
