Three-day city festival from September 4th to 6th, 2026 in Haltern am See — three stages, funfair with Ferris wheel, and children's flea market
Haltern am See, with around 38,000 inhabitants, is a town in the district of Recklinghausen (Münster administrative region), located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area — by the Halterner See, a popular local recreation area. The historic city center with remnants of the city wall, the LWL-Römermuseum (on the site of a Roman legionary camp), and the Haltern reservoirs shape the cityscape. The annual Heimatfest is Haltern's largest folk and city festival — three days of celebration in early September.
The Heimatfest takes place on three stages with different characters:
The three stages are within walking distance of each other — typical city festival hopping over the weekend.
In Kardinal-Graf-von-Galen-Park and at Kärntner Platz, you'll find the rides and stalls of the funfair — with a Ferris wheel as the main attraction, plus bumper cars, children's carousels, food stalls, and game booths. The funfair is primarily designed for families — from toddlers to teenagers, everyone will find something.
A special feature of Haltern is the art mile with selected artisans — daily from 11 AM to 6 PM in the city center. It complements the city festival's bustle with a quieter, more cultural component. On Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM, the children's flea market takes place at Disselhof — children sell their old toys and books, a popular meeting point for the younger generation.
During the Heimatfest, the city center shops remain open with extended hours: Saturday until 6 PM, Sunday 1 PM–6 PM (late-night shopping). Thus, the festival combines classic folk festival atmosphere with a shopping experience — a model that has led to success in many medium-sized cities in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Anyone visiting the Heimatfest should plan a detour to the LWL-Römermuseum Haltern. The site, located on a Roman legionary camp (believed to be Varus's Aliso), offers special exhibitions, original finds, and themed tours — a combination of city festival and cultural visit.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven three-stage format. Three musical atmospheres in the city center, a funfair with a Ferris wheel in the park, an arts and crafts mile, and a children's flea market make the festival a family highlight. The Haltern business association and local clubs organize the program in coordination with the City of Haltern am See.
