Traditional spring market around the cathedral — one of the oldest markets in the North
The Dommarkt — also known as Peermarkt in common parlance — is one of the traditional North German spring markets and has been celebrated in Schleswig for generations. The name «Peermarkt» («Horse Market») is a reminder that horses, small livestock, and agricultural equipment were primarily traded here in the past. Today, the funfair character is the focus — carousels, dodgems, Ferris wheel, swing rides, combined with classic funfair catering and show booths.
The market uses the Stadtfeld and the immediate surroundings of St. Petri Cathedral — a key location in Schleswig between the old town, Gottorf Castle, and the cathedral core. The compact area creates an intense funfair atmosphere that is part of the May weekend for Schleswig families. The rides are placed to offer a view of the cathedral as a backdrop — an unusually photogenic setting for a folk festival.
The focus is on showman businesses and rides from the North German Showmen's Association. The catering includes a classic North German selection: Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), fries, grilled items, candied almonds, cotton candy, gingerbread hearts. Draft beer and mulled beer at the festival tent, cocktails at the showman stands, non-alcoholic options for families.
Schleswig is the district capital of the Schleswig-Flensburg district and looks back on over a thousand years of history — from the Viking settlement of Haithabu to Gottorf Castle, home to the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums. The Dommarkt is one of the city's central folk festivals, alongside the Gottorf Christmas Market and the summer festivals on the harbor.
The market falls on the classic North German spring date with the May weekend. Families from the Schleswig-Flensburg district and the Danish border region use the long weekend for a market visit.
