Traditional Carnival Saturday Parade through the historic old town of the Glan town
The Fastnachtsumzug Meisenheim is one of the traditional carnival parades in the Nahe region. On Carnival Saturday, the colourful procession of floats, walking groups, brass bands, and carnival clubs winds its way through the historic old town of the small Glan town. The Lindenallee will be closed to traffic between 1 PM and 8 PM, and the parade route leads through the picturesque alleys with their half-timbered facades.
Meisenheim, the "Pearl of the Glantal valley", belongs to the Nahe-Glan municipality in the south of the Bad Kreuznach district. The town is famous for its largely preserved medieval town centre – a backdrop that lends the carnival parade a very special atmosphere.
The carnival tradition of Rheinhessen and the Nahe region is one of the most vibrant carnival cultures in Germany. In contrast to the Cologne Carnival with its large sessions and parades, rural carnival is more intimate and strongly supported by clubs. Carnival parades in small towns like Meisenheim are highlights of the year and attract visitors from the surrounding villages and towns.
The parade route leads through Lindenallee and the adjoining streets of the old town. Traffic will be interrupted between 1 PM and 8 PM. Floats with political-satirical messages, walking groups from local clubs, brass bands, guards, costumed families, and carnival clubs make up the procession. "Helau" is the typical fool's cry of the region. Kamelle (sweets), flowers, and small gifts are thrown into the crowd.
Meisenheim am Glan looks back on over 1,200 years of history and is considered one of the most beautiful historic small towns in Rhineland-Palatinate. The medieval town centre with its castle church, town fortifications, castle, and numerous half-timbered houses is largely preserved and is a listed monument. The town, with around 2,700 inhabitants, is the seat of the Nahe-Glan municipality and a school location.
The carnival parade is just one highlight of the carnival season in Meisenheim. In the run-up, there are gala sessions of the local carnival clubs, children's carnival for the little ones, masquerade balls, and sessions for ladies and seniors. The days around Rose Monday and Shrove Tuesday are celebrated intensely throughout the region.
