About Advent at the Frauenkirche

The Christmas Market at the Frauenkirche – also known as 'Advent on the Neumarkt' – is the most atmospheric of Dresden's Christmas markets. In Münzgasse and on the Neumarkt directly in front of the Frauenkirche, stalls offer handmade Christmas decorations, Saxon crafts, and culinary specialties such as Pulsnitz gingerbread and Stollen. An illuminated mulled wine pyramid is the landmark.

Advent magic in the heart of the Old Town

When thinking of Advent in Dresden, the big classics immediately come to mind: the Striezelmarkt, the Augustusmarkt – and the Christmas Market at the Frauenkirche, often also called 'Advent on the Neumarkt'. It's not the largest, but the most atmospheric: an intimate market directly in the shadow of the rebuilt Frauenkirche, Dresden's Baroque landmark.

Münzgasse and Neumarkt

The market is spread across two axes:

  • the Münzgasse, a narrow Old Town alley whose historic architecture becomes a stage through the stalls
  • the Neumarkt directly in front of the Frauenkirche, with the iconic Luther statue and a view of the dome

Saxon Crafts and Pulsnitz Gingerbread

The stalls consistently focus on traditional and handmade products:

  • Ore Mountains Crafts: Nutcrackers, Schwibbogen arches, miners, angels
  • Culinary Delights: Pulsnitz Gingerbread (a Saxon specialty from the town of the same name), Stollen, mulled wine, roasted almonds
  • French Nougat from vendors who travel directly from France – a distinctive hallmark of this market
  • Photo booths with professional prints

Mulled Wine Pyramid as a Landmark

A special landmark is the illuminated mulled wine pyramid, visible from afar in the center of the market – a homage to the Ore Mountains pyramid tradition, translated into Baroque Dresden. Locals and tourists gather in front of it in the evenings with steaming mugs of mulled wine.

In the State of Saxony

Dresden, the state capital of Saxony, is one of Germany's most visited cities during Advent. Visitors to the market at the Frauenkirche usually combine it with other markets: Striezelmarkt on Altmarkt (Germany's oldest Christmas market, since 1434), Augustusmarkt on Hauptstraße in Neustadt, the Romantic Market in the Stallhof, and the Medieval Christmas Market in the Stallhof Kurländer Palais. The Frauenkirchen market offers the most contemplative atmosphere of all these.

Advent at the Frauenkirche — edition 2026

The Christmas Market at the Frauenkirche 2026 runs from November 25 to December 24. Stalls in Münzgasse and on the Neumarkt with Ore Mountains crafts, Pulsnitz gingerbread, Stollen, French nougat, and the famous mulled wine pyramid. Free admission.

The 2026 edition sticks to the proven mix: handmade Christmas decorations from the Ore Mountains, Saxon culinary delights, French nougat from directly arriving vendors, mulled wine at the illuminated pyramid. The Frauenkirche provides the incomparable backdrop.
