Pirmasens Christmas Market on Schlossplatz with Belznickel, choirs, and creative market in the Landgrafensaal
The Belznickelmarkt Pirmasens transforms the Schlossplatz in the West Palatinate city into a festive Christmas world from November 25 to December 20, 2026. Its name comes from the Palatinate "Belznickel", a regional variant of Saint Nicholas, who originally visited houses on the eve of St. Nicholas Day dressed in fur.
Festively decorated stalls offer mulled wine, bratwurst, gingerbread, arts and crafts, and gifts. Choirs, brass bands, and rock bands take turns on stage. In parallel, the Christmas Creative Market in the Landgrafensaal of the Old Town Hall invites visitors to browse the creations of regional artisans on two Advent weekends. Admission to the entire market is free.
The Belznickelmarkt is the central Christmas event in the city of Pirmasens and holds a firm place in the West Palatinate Advent calendar. For almost four weeks, it transforms the Schlossplatz around the historic fountain complex and the Old Town Hall into an atmospheric market square, attracting Pirmasens residents as well as guests from the entire West Palatinate and Saarpfalz region.
Its unusual name refers to a Palatinate-Rhenish Hessian traditional figure: The "Belznickel" is a companion of Saint Nicholas, clad in furs, who used to roam the villages with a bell, switch, and sack, rewarding good children and admonishing disobedient ones. In Pirmasens, this figure has established itself as an identity-creating symbol of the Christmas market; Belznickel appearances and encounters with the gruff fellow are among the highlights of the opening days.
The festively decorated stalls offer a wide range of goods: mulled wine and non-alcoholic hot drinks, regional specialties such as Saumagen, bratwurst, crepes, and gingerbread, as well as arts and crafts, wood and textile work, candles, jewelry, and gift items. Several showmen also offer carousel rides and activities for children. The loving decoration with fairy lights and illuminated trees underscores the intimate character of the market.
A varied stage program takes place on the stage in the center of the Schlossplatz. School classes and children's choirs, classical concerts by the Pfalztheater, brass bands, church trombone choirs, as well as regional rock and pop bands provide different moods daily – from contemplative to lively. Advent concerts in the nearby Lutherkirche complement the musical offerings.
A special highlight is the Christmas Creative Market in the Landgrafensaal of the Old Town Hall. On the first two Advent weekends (November 30 / December 1 and December 7/8), regional artisans present their work: ceramics, jewelry, textiles, embroidery, glasswork, wood carvings, and paper art. The historic hall provides a festive setting for this exhibition, which has been considered a hidden gem among lovers of handmade gifts for years.
From November 25 to December 20, 2026, the Belznickelmarkt Pirmasens will once again beckon visitors to the Schlossplatz in the West Palatinate city. For nearly four weeks, festively decorated stalls, mulled wine and specialty stands, a varied stage program, and the traditional Belznickel appearance form the heart of Pirmasens' Advent season. On the first two Advent weekends, the Christmas Creative Market will also open its doors in the historic Landgrafensaal of the Old Town Hall.
The 2026 edition of the Belznickelmarkt continues the tradition of the Pirmasens Christmas market on the central Schlossplatz. Over several weeks, the program is divided between the main outdoor market and the sheltered creative market inside the Old Town Hall.
On the Schlossplatz, visitors will find a classic Christmas market offering with a regional focus: warm food, mulled wine, punch, and non-alcoholic hot drinks, alongside arts and crafts, gift items, candles, jewelry, and seasonal decorations. Choirs, brass ensembles, and bands alternate on stage, providing a wide musical spectrum.
The Christmas Creative Market in the Landgrafensaal of the Old Town Hall, held on the first two Advent weekends, showcases carefully curated works by regional artisans and is a sought-after destination for unique Christmas gifts.
