Dresden's large spring market on the Altmarkt
As the days grow longer, spring returns to the Altmarkt: for over three weeks, the central square of Dresden's Old Town transforms into a colorful market mile with stalls, a stage, rides, and gastronomic offerings. The Spring Market has been a firm fixture in the city's event calendar for years – in spring, it's the sister event to the famous Striezelmarkt at Advent.
More than 70 vendors from the region and across Germany present their range: regional specialties, sweets, grilled and smoked delicacies, spring decorations, crafts, and artisanal products. A beer and wine garden invites visitors to relax.
The historic Ferris wheel offers changing views over the Altmarkt, two children's carousels, and a train complement the rides. Numerous bands play on the main stage throughout the festival days. The program ranges from Rockabilly to Jazz, Swing, and Latin – with acts like Lazy Boys, Big Fat Shakin, and the Micha Winkler Hot Jazz Band.
In 2026, the city will provide two market stalls free of charge for the first time for newcomers and founders who want to present their innovative products. This acknowledges that the Spring Market also functions as a showcase for regional businesses.
The Altmarkt is located between the Kreuzkirche and the Kulturpalast in Dresden's Old Town, an independent city in the state of Saxony (AGS 14612). With the Frauenkirche, Brühl's Terrace, and the Royal Palace within walking distance, the Spring Market is ideally combined with a city visit.
On Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m., the Dresden Carpenters' Guild will open the market with the traditional raising of the Maypole. The folklore ensemble «Thea Maass» will dance around the pole, and Mayor Jan Pratzka will tap the first beer keg at noon.
Numerous acts will perform on the main stage throughout the festival days. The mix of Rockabilly, Jazz, Swing, and Latin creates a lively atmosphere throughout the market. In 2026, two newcomer stalls will receive a stand area free of charge for the first time – a recognition of the high number of applicants.
Take the S-Bahn from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to the Old Town in just a few minutes. Trams stop directly at the Altmarkt.
Free admission. Carousels and Ferris wheel are subject to a charge (tickets available at the on-site ticket offices).
The last festival day coincides with the International Dixieland Festival – a good reason to combine both events.
