Nature experience, plant bazaar and concerts in the Botanical Garden of the University of Mainz
The Botanical Garden of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is one of the most diverse university gardens in Germany. On approximately ten hectares on the edge of the campus, over 8,500 plant species from all climate zones on Earth grow — from the alpine rock garden and the tropical houses to the systematic bed area, where the relationships between plant families are clearly illustrated. The annual Summer Festival, traditionally held on a Sunday in August, opens this scientific collection to a broad audience in a particularly festive setting.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the garden transforms into a vibrant place of learning, experience, and encounter. Garden staff, scientists from the Institute of Organismic and Molecular Evolution Biology, and garden enthusiasts from numerous associations create a packed program. Themed tours explore the Mediterranean area, the succulent collection, the useful plants section, and the medicinal plant quarters maintained with the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Pharmacists. In the show house complex, guests encounter tropical orchids, bromeliads, and carnivorous plants. The plant bazaar, one of the day's highlights, offers perennials, potted plants, and seedlings cultivated by specialty nurseries and plant lovers — from tomato rarities to beloved hibiscus varieties.
The Summer Festival also serves as an educational offering on biodiversity. At activity stands, researchers and association representatives explain the importance of wild bees and bumblebees, demonstrate identification methods for native wild herbs, or show how insect hotels and deadwood piles can ecologically enhance one's own garden. Children can repot plants, roll seed balls, identify butterflies, or test their knowledge with nature memory games. Live music on the lawn in front of the main building, regional food stalls, coffee and cake, and an ice cream vendor provide culinary accompaniment to a relaxed late summer day.
Nestled between the university campus and the Hartenberg-Münchfeld recreational area, the Botanical Garden is easily accessible on foot, by bike, or via Mainzer Mobilität. For decades, the Summer Festival has been a fixture on the city's event calendar and is a vibrant expression of how the university, city society, and nature enthusiasts can come together.
The 2026 Summer Festival promises a packed program combining science, gardening, and festive culture. Starting at 11 a.m., staff and association members will welcome guests at the entrances on Anselm-Franz-von-Bentzel-Weg and Becherweg. Guided tours will depart every half hour, alternating between the show houses, the Mediterranean plant world, the medicinal plant quarters, and the systematic department. The plant bazaar at the central festival square opens at 11 a.m. and offers rarities from local specialty nurseries and enthusiasts. Concurrently, botanical associations, beekeepers, and nature conservation groups from Rheinhessen will present their work. In the late afternoon, a concert on the festival lawn will conclude the day before the festival winds down around 6 p.m.
