Elaborate hall show by the Mainzer Carneval Club in the Electoral Palace
The MCC Gala Session in the Electoral Palace, alongside the sessions of the Mainzer Carneval-Verein, is one of the most important hall events of the entire Mainz Carnival campaign. With its first Gala Session, the MCC opens the season of its major hall sessions in January, laying the foundation for a series of events that extend to the MCC finale on Carnival weekend.
The Electoral Palace, built from 1627 onwards as the residence of the Mainz Archbishops and Electors, offers a backdrop with its Academy and Festival Hall that underscores the festive character of the session. Dress code includes tailcoats, tuxedos, formal evening wear, or festive gowns. The uniforms of the Mainz Guards—Prinzengarde, Ranzengarde, Klepper-Garde, MCC's own Guard—and the club attire of the MCC members complete the picture. The MCC committee, in full attendance, handles moderation and 'Hopperdittchen' responses.
The program combines the classic elements of a Mainz hall session. The opening is usually marked by a performance from the Mainzer Hofsänger or one of the MCC's own singing groups with traditional Mainz Carnival songs. Political and socio-critical 'Büttenredner' comment on current political events with the typical Mainz Carnival blend of sharpness and wit, often touching on national and international topics. The MCC Guards present the committee march and show dances, while sketches and musical contributions provide changes in pace. The highlight is the major 'Bütt' performances by renowned Mainz Carnival orators.
The 1st MCC Gala Session is among the most high-caliber and best-organized hall sessions of the Meenzer Fassenacht and is a must-attend event for anyone wishing to experience Mainz Carnival in its organized peak form. Tickets are highly coveted and usually sell out weeks before the session.
The 2026 program follows the proven dramaturgy of the MCC Gala Session. After admission starting at 5 PM, the session begins punctually at 6:11 PM with the entry of the MCC committee and an opening block by the MCC singing groups or the Mainzer Hofsänger. This is followed by the registration of honored guests and the first major program block. Over several hours, singing groups, political 'Büttenreden', show dances by the Guards, sketches, and musical contributions alternate, each interrupted by breaks. The highlight is the grand finale block with a communal swaying song and the exit of the committee.
