Trakehner — a German horse breed
The Trakehner horse is one of Germany's most prestigious warmblood breeds. The breed originated from 1732 onwards in the East Prussian state stud farm Trakehnen (now Yasnaya Polyana, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia) as a result of systematically breeding purebreds (English Thoroughbreds and Arabian stallions) with the robust local horses of East Prussia. After fleeing and expulsion in 1944/45, Trakehner breeders saved a small remnant population to West Germany and founded the Trakehner Verband in Neumünster — which remains the center of global Trakehner breeding to this day.
Holstenhallen Neumünster — the venue
The Holstenhallen Neumünster are one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important event venues, a complex of several halls equipped for equestrian sports. They have been the home of the Trakehner Stallion Market for decades and also host major horse shows and auctions from other associations annually.
Program highlights
- Stallion Licensing — the most important recognition for new breeding stallions of the Trakehner breed. Younger stallions are presented to a jury; only the most qualitatively convincing receive recognition as breeding stallions.
- Auctions — Stallion auction (licensed breeding stallions), riding horse auction (qualified riding and competition horses), mare auction (licensed breeding mares). International market.
- Gala Show — the festive evening event featuring quadrilles, pas de deux, pas de trois, show performances, and the famous “Trakehner Presentation” — a choreographic staging of the breed.
- Seminars and Lectures — expert topics on breeding, raising, and sport.
Neumünster — the equestrian city
Neumünster is an independent city in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein with around 80,000 inhabitants. It calls itself the equestrian city — Trakehner breeding and the Holstenhallen are the main reasons for this. Its central location between Hamburg and Kiel, with ICE high-speed train connections, makes Neumünster easily accessible for international visitors.
