Largest medieval market in the Merzig-Wadern district on the shore of Losheim Lake
Losheim Lake in the northern Merzig-Wadern district is one of the most popular recreational areas in Saarland – with hiking trails, swimming opportunities, and the nostalgic Merzig-Büschfeld museum railway. Once a year, on the first weekend of October, the lake takes on a completely different purpose: it becomes the stage for the Medieval Spectacle Losheim, one of the largest and most atmospheric medieval markets in Saarland.
Behind the festival is the group Heimdalls-Erben, which has been organizing the annual event in Losheim since 2014 – with the mix of historical authenticity, show elements, and family-friendly atmosphere that characterizes this type of event. Heimdalls-Erben also organizes medieval markets in other German states and is considered a reliable organizer with high standards in the scene.
Around the market, you'll find traders and craftspeople offering jewelry, leather goods, costumes, woodwork, horn items, carvings, and medieval food. Camp groups set up their tents and demonstrate historical crafts, combat techniques, and daily life. Medieval games to participate in, a knight's tournament for children, a falconer with bird of prey flight shows, and – a visual highlight – camels and miniature ponies ensure that even the youngest visitors can experience something for hours. Fortune tellers, a historical tattoo stand, and show fights complete the program.
The stages are occupied during the day by the well-known medieval music band Maleficius; the evening highlight is regularly the performance by Spilldeyvel, one of the loudest and most energetic market bands on the German-speaking medieval scene. The music program is complemented by the entertainer Timolino and belly dance performances by the group Tribal Zariefe. The acoustic mix of bagpipes, shawms, drums, and string instruments gives the market its unmistakable atmosphere.
Losheim am See is a municipality with just under 16,000 inhabitants in the Merzig-Wadern district – the northern tip of Saarland, which operates under the tourism brand "Saarschleifenland". Visitors to the medieval spectacle can easily combine their stay with an excursion to the Saarschleife near Mettlach or the nearby Hochwald National Park Hunsrück-Hochwald – the mountains of the Saargau are only a short drive away.
