When the Steam Locomotive Huffs Again
What connects Lorraine with the Petite France romance of the Moselle is the Losheim am See Museum Railway for the northern Saarland: a living railway monument, supported by the Museums-Eisenbahn-Club Losheim e.V. association, which keeps steam locomotives, historic carriages, and railway post material in operation on a historic route in the Hochwald foothills. Once a year — on the first weekend of August — the big summer festival is celebrated: the Steam Locomotive and Railway Post Festival.
Steam Locomotive N°34
The centerpiece is Steam Locomotive N°34 — the striking main star of the museum railway. It is meticulously maintained and overhauled during the winter months; by the festival weekend, it is back in full operation. The clouds of steam over the platforms, the whistle, the mechanical clatter when starting — this is the acoustic and visual highlight for railway fans and a fascinating experience for children who usually only know such machines from picture books.
Railway Post — An Almost Forgotten Tradition
The second focus is Railway Post: special railway wagons where mail was sorted and postmarked during transit. These wagons are historically preserved in Losheim and are shown in operation with historic equipment during the festival. Visitors can have letters and postcards marked with the special Railway Post postmark — a coveted philatelic rarity.
Rides and Workshop Visits
A central program item is the rides with the steam locomotive on the museum route. In previous years' festivals, seats were quickly booked out — early registration recommended. In parallel, the association's workshop is open to visitors: Here, you can look behind the scenes, observe restoration work on historic carriages, and talk to club members about the technology.
Music Program
The festival is not just a technical gathering but also a family celebration. On Saturday evening, the band ReSet plays rock, pop, and Schlager cover songs on the open-air stage; on Sunday, the band OLDIES takes over with classics from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Food is served with classic Volksfest dishes, plus coffee and cake from the women's association.
Losheim am See — Hochwald Tourism
Losheim am See is located in the Merzig-Wadern district in the northern Saarland, at the transition to Rhineland-Palatinate's Hunsrück region. Losheim is known for its reservoir (swimming lake, pedal boats, beach bar), for the Museum Railway, and for its location on the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the premium long-distance hiking trail. Visitors to the steam locomotive festival can combine the weekend with hiking, swimming, or a tour in the Hochwald region.
Atmosphere
Arriving in Losheim on festival day, you see the picture of a classic railway festival: clouds of steam over the platform, model railway fans with cameras, children with cardboard trains, the queue for bratwurst at the snack stand, the band on the stage in the background. It's a family festival with a clearly defined identity — well-maintained technical heritage meets Volksfest catering in one of the most beautiful Hochwald communities in the Saarland.
