Wine and enjoyment hike around the Stetten Yburg in the Remstal — three days at Pentecost
Kernen in the Remstal is a municipality with around 16,000 inhabitants in the Rems-Murr district (state of Baden-Württemberg), formed in 1975 by the merger of the districts Stetten im Remstal and Rommelshausen. Its location between Waiblingen and Schorndorf, on the eastern edge of the Stuttgart region, makes Kernen one of Württemberg's most renowned wine-growing towns. The Stetten Yburg — a medieval castle ruin on a mountain spur with a panoramic view over the Remstal — towers above the municipality.
Over the Pentecost weekend (May 23–25, 2026), participating wineries and restaurateurs will set up five white pagoda tents at strategic points between the Yburg and the vineyards — tasting stations connected by a hiking route of approximately 4–6 km. The hike leads through vineyards, past dry stone walls, viewpoints, and the castle ruin itself. In clear weather, the view extends to the Swabian Jura and the Stuttgart region.
Around ten wineries from Kernen are participating, including several with supra-regional renown:
The restaurateurs from Stetten and Rommelshausen accompany the wine route with fresh seasonal dishes under the motto 'So schmeckt das Remstal' — with a main focus on regional products from farms around Kernen.
The Remstal belongs to the Württemberg wine-growing region and is one of Germany's oldest growing regions. Specialties: Riesling, Trollinger, Lemberger (a Württemberg classic, known as Blaufränkisch in other regions), Schwarzriesling, and Kerner (a variety crossbred in Weinsberg in 1929, named after the Swabian poet Justinus Kerner — fittingly also the namesake of Kernen). The steep slopes around the Yburg are classic Swabia.
Admission is free — you only pay for wine and food at the respective stands. There are no ticket concepts (like at commercial wine hikes). The idea: an accessible enjoyment day for families, wine connoisseurs, and hikers alike.
In 2026, Pentecost will transform the Yburg hill above Kernen into a walkable park of wine and enjoyment. On Saturday, May 23, the wine route opens at 4:00 PM — the tasting stations will be open until midnight. Sunday, May 24, the program runs all day from 11:00 AM to midnight; Whit Monday, May 25, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM for a more relaxed end to the festival.
The hiking route between the five pagodas is about 4–6 km long and can be walked in any direction — no fixed order, no time pressure. At each station, the wineries will pour Riesling, Trollinger, Lemberger, and Schwarzriesling, and the restaurateurs will serve seasonal dishes made from regional products.
Admission to the wine route and all stations is free. Wine by the glass (0.1 or 0.25 l) at winery prices, food at usual restaurant prices. Reusable souvenir glasses are often sold.
By S-Bahn: S 2 Stuttgart–Schorndorf, stop Stetten-Beinstein, from there a walk of approx. 15 minutes to the starting point (Stetten Protestant Church or Glockenkelter). By car via the B 14 or B 29 (Rems-Murr district). Parking available in the districts of Stetten and Rommelshausen.
Saturday, May 23, 2026: 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Sunday, May 24, 2026: 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Whit Monday, May 25, 2026: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Admission to the wine route and all tasting stations is free. Wine and food at the stands at usual festival prices. Good walking ability and sturdy footwear recommended — the hiking route leads through vineyards, partly on gravel and stepped paths.
