Traditional Kirchweih (church consecration) fair in the Heimatscheune Nazza — 155th edition
The Nazzaer Kirmes is one of the oldest village Kirmes traditions in the Wartburgkreis district. It dates back to the medieval Kirchweih (church consecration) celebrations: every village celebrates the consecration of its church once a year, which over time evolved into a secular festival with markets, music, dancing, and performances. In Nazza, the festival has developed into a multi-day Volksfest (folk festival) supported by the local association — the Nazzaer Kirmesgesellschaft e.V. With the 155th edition in 2026, the documented tradition dates back to the 19th century.
The venue is the Heimatscheune Nazza, the social centre of the village. The barn is used throughout the year for club nights, Advent celebrations, and private parties — for the Kirmes, it is converted into a festival hall. Inside, tables are arranged, the stage alternates between cover bands, folk dance groups, and DJs, and beer, mulled wine in autumn, wine, and cocktails are served at the bars. Outside the barn, there is a fairground with small rides, carousels, and shooting galleries — the classic Kirmes setup.
The festival days follow a proven schedule: Friday opening evening with music and dancing, Saturday main festival day with a big dance night and live band until late, Sunday family day with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch, and a programme for children and seniors, Monday closing with a disco or cover band. The Kirmesgesellschaft provides catering with volunteer helpers from the village — the proceeds go to the association and fund the next Kirmes.
Nazza is located in western Thuringia in the Wartburgkreis district, on the border with Hainich National Park. The municipality has about 750 inhabitants and is one of the smaller villages in the region, but it is known for its vibrant club culture. In addition to the Kirmesgesellschaft, the Burg- und Heimatverein (Castle and Heritage Association) and several sports clubs are active in village life. Visitors to the Kirmes immerse themselves in authentic Thuringian village sociability — unadulterated by tourism, warm, and rooted in the locality.
