Village Advent on the Old School Courtyard
Nazza is a village with just under 700 inhabitants in the Wartburgkreis district of West Thuringia, located on the Hainich. Like many villages in the Werra and Hainich region, Nazza maintains its own independent Advent tradition. The Adventsmarkt takes place on the Old School Courtyard — the former schoolyard of the village, which is now used as a festival area. The Castle and Heritage Association, the fire department, the church community, and some private individuals from the village organize the market together.
Program Character
Stalls are set up on the Old School Courtyard — hand-woven baskets from the Hainich, wood carvings from the Thuringian Forest, embroidery and crochet work, homemade jams, candied almonds, gingerbread, and stollen. The village singers and the small mixed choir present Advent songs. The food ranges from snowballs with egg liqueur to waffles and chocolate-covered fruits, as well as classic pea soup and hearty cabbage pastries baked in a wood-fired oven.
Nazza and the Hainich
Nazza is located on the eastern edge of the Hainich National Park — the last large contiguous primeval beech forest in Central Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors to the Adventsmarkt can also visit the Hainichhaus (National Park Information Centre) and the Treetop Walk nearby. In winter, the snow-dusted National Park offers a special hiking landscape.
