23rd Edition from August 6th to 8th, 2026 in the Balver Höhle cave in Sauerland
The Balver Höhle, a 100-meter deep karst cave on the outskirts of Balve in the Märkischer Kreis (Arnsberg administrative district, Sauerland), with a hall length of 60 meters and a height of 18 meters, is considered one of the largest cultural caves in Europe. It has been used as a venue since the 1960s — the Festspiele Balver Höhle e.V. organizes several concert series here annually, including the renowned Irish Folk & Celtic Music Festival, which will enter its 23rd edition in 2026.
The festival concept divides the weekend into three thematic evenings: Irish Thursday (August 6th) with Velvet Green and The Kilkenny Band — kicking off with classic Irish-British folk and pub sound. Irish Friday (August 7th) combines the Festspielchor Balve with Seán Reeves, The Ceili Family, Zak Moran Band, The Feelgood McClouds, and Gerry Galvin — the evening with the widest mix. Irish Saturday (August 8th) features the 1st Sauerland Pipes and Drums, Atlanders, Almost Irish, The Porter Bellys, and Oakwood Paddies — the rockier and livelier sounds for the finale.
The Zak Moran Band from Ireland is considered one of the leading live bands on the contemporary Irish folk scene — frontman Zak Moran combines traditional songs with his own compositions, supported by fiddle, tin whistle, and bodhrán. The Atlanders from Ireland represent authentic pub folk and are regular guests at Ireland festivals across Europe. The Porter Bellys, also from Ireland, bring the rockier variant of the genre — fans of Dropkick Murphys will feel at home with The Porter Bellys. Almost Irish travels from Denmark — the band specializes in the acoustic version of Irish Folk.
With the 1st Sauerland Pipes and Drums and the Festspielchor Balve, the festival also has a strong local component. The Sauerland Pipes maintain the Scottish pipe band tradition in Westphalia — they open or close each festival evening with their typical bagpipe performance. The Festspielchor Balve, a choir of amateurs with professional aspirations, will perform on Friday evening in a crossover program with Irish singer Seán Reeves.
The Balver Höhle is a special venue in the summer: constant 8-10°C indoor temperature, unique acoustics thanks to the karst walls, tiered seating for around 1,800 guests per evening. The organizer recommends warm clothing — "it's cool here even in summer". Several stages allow for seamless transitions. The foyer area in front of the cave offers catering with Irish beer (Guinness, Kilkenny), stout, and whiskey, as well as pub food.
The Irish Folk & Celtic Music Festival in the Balver Höhle has been held since 2002 — 2026, with its 23rd edition, marks a quarter-century in sight. The organizer is the non-profit association Festspiele Balver Höhle e.V., which makes an important contribution to the culture of rural Sauerland with the festival. The event attracts around 5,000 visitors annually and has been a focal point for the Irish folk scene in NRW and beyond for years.
The 23rd edition of the Irish Folk & Celtic Music Festival 2026 has been carefully curated: each evening has its own musical focus, featuring bands from Ireland, Great Britain, Denmark, and Germany. The format has proven successful since 2002 — tiered seating for around 1,800 guests per evening in the karst cave, with pub catering in the foyer area.
Organizer Festspiele Balver Höhle e.V. is relying on established headliners (Zak Moran Band, Porter Bellys) as well as younger acts (Oakwood Paddies) in 2026. Local roots are ensured by the 1st Sauerland Pipes and Drums and the Festspielchor Balve.
