A Festival with Counter-Culture DNA
Founded in 1976, a time when open-air festivals were still a rare and political form of event in Germany, the Stemweder Open Air upholds the attitude of its early years to this day: completely free entry, organized by the "Verein für Jugend, Freizeit und Kultur in Stemwede e.V." (Association for Youth, Leisure, and Culture in Stemwede) and financed through sponsorship, funding from the Initiative Musik, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), and audience donations. The festival is a commitment to the principle that subculture and live music should not only be accessible to those who can afford it.
Ilweder Wäldchen as the Venue
Stemwede is located in the far north of East Westphalia, on the border with Lower Saxony, in the district of Minden-Lübbecke. The Ilweder Wäldchen in the Stemwede district of Ilwede is a small forest with clearings where five to six stages are set up: the Waldbühne (Forest Stage) as the main stage, the Wiesenbühne (Meadow Stage), the Sonnensystem (Solar System), the Rockzelt (Rock Tent), the Kuhles für Kids (Cool Stuff for Kids – children's area), and the Grillplatz (Barbecue Area). Paths through the forest connect the stages – little concrete, lots of natural ground, its own unique atmosphere.
Musical Profile: Punk, Ska, Hardcore, Electronic
The festival has a clear musical orientation: Punk, Hardcore, Ska, Indie Rock, Reggae, Electronic. The bands come from the national and international DIY scene, with occasional US punk legends (Agnostic Front has played here), Dutch acts (Splinter), Australian bands (The Cloverhearts), and the German scene with artists like Frittenbude, ZSK, Team Scheisse, Mal Élevé, and Kochkraft durch KMA. The artists performing here are not chart-toppers – but they form the political and cultural backbone of the German alternative scene.
Association Structure and Volunteering
The Verein für Jugend, Freizeit und Kultur in Stemwede e.V. is the organizational body behind the festival. Hundreds of volunteers from Stemwede and the surrounding area set up the festival, manage the stages, sanitary facilities, camping, and bar – the DIY principle here is not a pose, but a practice. The festival works closely with Initiative Musik and the BKM, which allows for free programming with a high-quality lineup.
Camping and Arrival in the East Westphalian Province
Stemwede is not easily accessible by public transport – the festival recommends carpooling, bus shuttles from Lübbecke and Diepholz train stations, or arriving by bicycle. Camping is permitted and is an integral part of the festival atmosphere. The festival grounds in the forest give the entire event a campsite feel, which is an important part of the experience for regular visitors.
