Advent atmosphere with a living nativity scene and Sauerland associations at the historic Drostenhaus
If you fancy a Christmas market without the crowds in December, the Christmas Market at Drostenhaus in Balve (Märkischer Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia) is the right place to go. On the second weekend of Advent, the historic heart of the town in the southern Sauerland region takes center stage: around 40 stalls, many of them in the association's own wooden huts, are grouped on Drostenplatz and along the Drostenhaus, which gives the market its name.
The unmistakable signature element is the living nativity scene on Drostenplatz. In cooperation with the Sauerland butcher Jedowski, real animals move in every year: the oxen Wieland and the donkey Kasimir are the secret stars for families with small children. Around the nativity scene, choirs and music associations from Balve and the surrounding area give short concerts – from brass ensembles to mixed choirs, a warm acoustic backdrop is created.
What sets this market apart from commercial large-scale events: The stalls are mainly operated by Balve associations. Rifle brotherhoods, sports clubs, parish communities, and carnival societies use the days to top up their club treasuries. You'll find traditional Sauerland specialties like potato pancakes with apple sauce, lard cakes, kale with smoked sausage, homemade cookies, and of course mulled wine in various variations. In addition, there is a "Christmas village" in the IBS parking lot, complementary handicrafts, and small gifts from regional production.
The namesake Drostenhaus is a historic half-timbered building that shapes the atmosphere. Illuminated in December, it becomes an impressive backdrop for photos. Balve itself is located in the southernmost tip of the Märkischer Kreis on the border with the Hochsauerlandkreis – a region known for its caves (Balver Höhle, Reckenhöhle), carnival customs, and the rural structures of the Sauerland.
The market is clearly family-oriented: children can pet animals, do crafts, bring cookies, and be there for the visit from St. Nicholas, who traditionally walks across the square on one of the market days. Its manageable size makes the market an alternative to the large NRW Christmas markets in Dortmund, Cologne, or Essen – no stress, no admission fee, but genuine Sauerland atmosphere.
