World first: first tattoo convention in a cave — Europe's largest cultural cave, with over 250 international tattoo artists
It's a summer highlight of a special kind: On Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, 2026, the 1st International Tattoo Convention Balve will take place in the Balver Höhle — a world first, as this is the first tattoo convention in the world to be held in a cave.
With its 11,000 square meter hall, the Balver Höhle at Helle 2 is Europe's largest cultural cave. For decades, concerts, theater, folk festivals (Volksfeste), and events have been held here — the unique acoustics and atmosphere of the naturally formed cave make every event an incomparable experience. For a tattoo convention, the cave is a stage like no other.
The organizing team has curated a lineup of over 250 national and international tattoo artists. The offerings range from traditional old-school tattoos to realism, black & grey, watercolor tattoos, Japanese styles, tribal, lettering, and experimental micro-tattoos. Walk-in tattoos are available — no appointment needed, spontaneous choice on-site.
The event's motto — "We only have one skin color – Colorful" — is programmatic: The tattoo scene is presented here as a consciously inclusive subculture, with a clear statement against discrimination and racism. Tattoos transcend boundaries of origin, religion, and generation — this is actively emphasized by the organizers.
In addition to the tattoo artist booths, there is a dense supporting program:
Children and adolescents under 16 years — free admission. Free parking. Dogs only allowed in the outdoor area. Ticket sales via Eventbrite and on-site. Strict refund policy (tickets non-refundable). Travel: Helle 2, 58802 Balve — directions for car, public transport, bicycle, and hiking trails on the official Eventbrite page.
Balve is located in the Märkischer Kreis in the South Westphalian Sauerland region — a small town with just under 12,000 inhabitants, whose most famous landmark is the Balver Höhle. The Sauerland mountain landscape, hiking opportunities, and the naturally formed cave make the region an unusual but atmospheric venue for the first tattoo convention of its kind.
Two days of premiere in a unique location. The Balver Höhle as a venue for a tattoo convention is conceptually bold and unprecedented worldwide. The combination of 250 tattoo artists, walk-in option, market, entertainment, and celebrity guests aims to establish the event as a new focal point of the international tattoo scene.
Tickets via Eventbrite and on-site. Children and adolescents under 16 years free admission. Tickets non-refundable.
