About Stadtfest Balve

The Stadtfest Balve, traditionally known as Volksvergnügen, takes place every two years in even-numbered years on the second Saturday in September. 2026 is a festival year again — expected on Saturday, September 12th, with Sunday shopping on the following day. Balve's town center transforms into a stage: live music, demonstrations, a craft and farmer's market with regional products, plus hands-on activities for families. The organizer is the City of Balve in cooperation with the town center office; clubs, shops, and institutions from Balve can participate free of charge with a stand. Admission is free.

Volksvergnügen in the Sauerland — the biennial tradition

The Stadtfest Balve or Volksvergnügen is one of the most important civic festivals in the Märkisches Sauerland. It takes place every two years in even-numbered years on the second Saturday in September — so in 2026, presumably on September 12th, 2026, in conjunction with Sunday shopping on September 13th. The small town on the edge of the Hönnetal valley (around 11,000 inhabitants) becomes a stage for the entire region that weekend.

The Concept — Clubs, Music, Crafts, Market

The Volksvergnügen follows a proven formula:

  • Live music on several stages in the town center — from brass bands and Schlager to cover bands
  • Demonstrations by Balve clubs — dance groups, carnival societies, sports clubs
  • Craft and farmer's market with producers from the Sauerland — cheese, sausage, bread, honey, handicrafts
  • Hands-on activities for families and children — crafting, games, and movement activities
  • Gastronomy from Balve restaurateurs and clubs in the surrounding streets

Sunday Shopping

On the Sunday after the town festival, the shops in Balve's town center open for Sunday shopping — a welcome extension of the weekend for strolling, shopping, and meeting. The festival atmosphere from Saturday is maintained.

Who Exhibits? Who Participates?

The town center office of the City of Balve coordinates registrations. Clubs, shops, and institutions from Balve participate free of charge — a deliberate decision by the city to showcase local diversity. Stands from outside the town are possible, but limited: the Volksvergnügen is primarily intended to celebrate Balve's identity.

A Weekend for the Whole Family

Unlike many commercially oriented town festivals, the Balver Volksvergnügen focuses on club life — shooting clubs, carnival societies, music clubs, and sports clubs use the day to present themselves and attract new members. For families from Balve and the surrounding villages of Beckum, Garbeck, Mellen, Höveringhausen, and Volkringhausen, it is the must-attend event of September.

Stadtfest Balve — edition 2026

The biennial Balver Volksvergnügen is expected to take place on September 12, 2026 (second Saturday in September), followed by Sunday shopping on September 13th. Live music, craft and farmer's market, demonstrations by Balve clubs, hands-on activities for families. Organizer: City of Balve with town center office. Free admission. Program will be finalized in the course of 2026.

The City of Balve is planning the traditional Volksvergnügen in the town center again for September 12, 2026. The town festival takes place every two years in even-numbered years and brings together citizens, clubs, shops, and guests around stages, a farmer's and craft market, and numerous interactive stations. On Sunday, the Sunday shopping offers a relaxed extension. The official program announcement with stage plan and club participation will be published in summer 2026.
