Ten Days of World Literature in the Heart of Berlin
As the days grow shorter in September, Berlin transforms into the world capital of literature for ten days. The Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin — ilb for short — has been the meeting point for writers from all continents and for a literature-loving audience discovering new voices and reconnecting with established ones since 2001.
The festival center is located at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele on Schaperstraße in Wilmersdorf. But the ilb takes place all over the city: in the historic Babylon on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, the legendary Buchhändlerkeller in Charlottenburg, the Literaturhaus Berlin on Fasanenstraße, and occasionally at the Humboldt Forum. For its 26th edition in 2026, over 200 authors from more than 40 countries are announced — a cross-section of contemporary world literature that is second to none.
Since reunification, Berlin has been the German-speaking literary metropolis — publishing houses, artist residencies, bookstores, and an exceptionally curious audience make the ilb more than just a reading festival. Within the state of Berlin, Eastern European, Mediterranean, Asian, and African literature combine to create a polyphony that can be experienced so densely in no other German city. The festival is supported by the Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics.
If books move you — and you want to listen to a Congolese poet or a Chilean novelist in a hall with thousands of listeners without missing out on translation (all events are bilingual German-original) — this festival is a must-attend. Even those who simply enjoy the atmosphere in the foyer of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele between readings will get their money's worth.
For the 26th time, the ilb brings world literature to Berlin. Jeet Thayil takes on the role of Curator in Residence with his own program line, and the Algerian-French writer Boualem Sansal, who is under house arrest, is the patron — a political signal in a politically charged festival edition. Over 200 voices from 40+ countries will travel to Berlin for ten days.
The official program will be released in the summer of 2026; preview events have been running since May 2026 (including "Read, Read, Read" on May 13, "Satzwechsel" on May 4, and a reading with Kiran Desai on June 12 at the Humboldt Forum).
The full program will be released in the summer of 2026. The following cornerstones have already been confirmed:
Haus der Berliner Festspiele: U-Bahn U9 Spichernstraße (approx. 5 min. walk) or U3/U9 Spichernstraße. From Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) take S5/S7 to Charlottenburg, then U7 to Adenauerplatz. Babylon: U2 Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
Individual event tickets typically range from €8 to €15, with concessions available. School classes and students receive discounts. Festival passes are available. Many events are also streamed live on YouTube.
Readings are held in the original language, with German translation (read by actors) and German-English moderation. No prior knowledge is required.
