Germany's most important theatre festival at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele
Since its inception in 1964, the Berliner Theatertreffen has been the festival where the German-language theatre scene measures itself annually. An independent jury of experienced theatre critics travels throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland over the course of a season, reviewing around 400 productions. From these, they select ten "remarkable" productions that perform in Berlin in May.
The venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele at Schaperstraße 24 (Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district). The modernist building from the 1960s houses several stages, including the Great Hall, the Side Stage, and the Foyer, which host the festival's events in parallel. The ten selected productions are usually shown two to three times – tickets regularly sell out within hours.
For years, the jury's selection has consciously encompassed "all forms of theatre: from dance and puppetry to music theatre and theatrical installations." The Theatertreffen thus serves as an indicator of how German-language stage language is evolving: towards post-dramatic forms, performance, documentary theatre, and increasingly international collaborations.
Alongside the main programme, there is the Camp Theatertreffen (a workshop for young theatre makers), readings from the Stückemarkt featuring new theatre texts, guest performances, discussions, and award ceremonies such as the 3sat Prize. Concerts, late-night shows, and talks in the foyer transform the Haus der Berliner Festspiele into a meeting point for the entire industry during these two weeks.
The 62nd edition of the Berliner Theatertreffen runs from May 1st to 17th, 2026, at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele (Schaperstraße 24, 10719 Berlin). The organiser is Berliner Festspiele.
The focus is on the ten "remarkable" productions of the season from the German-speaking world, selected by the independent theatre critics' jury. In addition, there is the Camp Theatertreffen, readings from the Stückemarkt, discussions, award ceremonies, guest performances, and concerts.
The exact selection of the ten productions and the complete festival programme will traditionally be announced in early February 2026 at the annual jury press conference. The festival is structured as follows:
The current detailed programme will be successively published on berlinerfestspiele.de.
Single tickets per production and festival passes are available through Berliner Festspiele. Discounted tickets are available for students, pupils, and other groups. Detailed tariffs will be published with the programme announcement.
Take the U-Bahn lines U3 or U9 to Spichernstraße (approx. 200 m). Bus lines 204, N3, N7X, and N9 stop directly in front of the venue. By car, use Schaperstraße / Hohenzollerndamm – parking is available on the side streets, usually easy to find on weekends.
Tickets are sold through Berliner Festspiele. Single tickets, festival passes, and discounted tickets for students and pupils are available. The ten main productions typically sell out very quickly – early booking is recommended.
To fully experience the festival, combine a main production with a talk in the foyer and a reading from the Stückemarkt – this way, you'll also experience the discussions and upcoming material for future seasons, not just the classics of the current one.
