Federal Competition for Young Theatre at Haus der Berliner Festspiele – seven youth productions, a forum, and workshops
Alongside the Theatertreffen for professional stages, the Theatertreffen der Jugend is the second major festival brand of the Berliner Festspiele on Schaperstraße. Since 1980, the competition has brought together seven selected youth productions from all over Germany at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele every May/June – serving as a platform, meeting space, and source of inspiration for young, non-professional theatre between the ages of 14 and 21.
In 2026, the 47th edition runs from May 30 to June 6. A five-member jury invited seven productions from five federal states out of 103 submitted productions from all 16 federal states. Featured are: ALICE im Wunderl@nd (Göttingen), ANNE (Cottbus), APOLLON – STOP TRYNA BE GOD (Düsseldorf), FRISCH gefragt! (Berlin), Mission (im)possible – in the end lies the beginning (Berlin), TRAUER//FALL (Cologne), and Zum Lachen in den Keller (Stuttgart).
Parallel to the performances, the Forum programme runs for the invited ensembles and accredited multipliers. The 2026 motto is: "(Re-)Claim Space: Theatre Spaces and their Political Dimension". Workshops, talks with jury members, artist discussions, research formats, and writing days frame the productions and connect young theatre makers nationwide.
The venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele at Schaperstraße 24, Berlin-Wilmersdorf (district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf) – U-Bahn lines U3/U9 Spichernstraße, approx. 200 m. This traditional theatre building, with its Great Hall, Side Stage, and Foyer, is in continuous use during the festival week: workshops in the mornings, productions in the afternoons and evenings, followed by discussion rounds in the foyer.
