Umbrella event for the city of Emden's summer cultural program with open-air concerts, stage performances, and public viewing for the World Cup.
The Kultursommer Emden bundles the cultural activities of the summer months, June to September, under a common umbrella. The program includes free concert series, dance events, open-stage evenings, special cultural formats, and public viewing broadcasts of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The Kultursommer is initiated by the City of Emden and implemented with numerous partners from the cultural and leisure sectors.
The main stage for the program is Stephansplatz, which is used on Fridays from 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 p.m. Brückstraße is the venue for the concert program of the Apollo association: Fridays from 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m., plus three additional weekends starting June 19. With Hahnsche Insel opposite the Kunsthalle Emden, a new open-air venue is added in 2026, expanding the offerings towards exhibition and art audiences.
A special program within the Kultursommer is the public viewing of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The German team's matches will be broadcast on a big screen in the Neuer Markt: June 14 (7 p.m.), June 20 (10 p.m.), and June 25. Due to the host countries USA, Canada, and Mexico, the broadcast times will sometimes be unusual.
Confirmed concert dates at Stephansplatz: July 4 with Sterre Weldring, July 10 with Frank Wendel & Band, July 11 with Eljay, and August 28 with Kovsky. Further dates will be announced in the run-up to the respective weekends. All concerts are free of charge and are aimed at a broad audience from Emden and the region.
The program for the 2026 summer season builds on the experience of previous years and expands the offerings with Hahnsche Insel as a new venue opposite the Kunsthalle. Brückstraße will host the Apollo association's own concert program on Fridays and Saturdays and will be extended by three additional weekends starting June 19, 2026. The concert series at Stephansplatz follows a regular schedule on Friday and Saturday evenings.
A special highlight in 2026 is the public viewing of the German national team's matches in the World Cup in North America. The broadcasts will take place on a big screen at Neuer Markt. Due to the North American time zones, the kick-off times will be unusual (e.g., 10 p.m.).
The 2026 program is confirmed on the websites of the City of Emden and the Tourist Information:
Further program items (Eljay Specials, open-stage evenings, festival dates) will be published on the official website.
