Four days of Wine Days on the Kaiserstuhl in Germany's warmest municipality
Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district is officially the warmest municipality in Germany — the German Weather Service's climate station regularly measures Germany's highest annual average temperatures here. The south-facing slopes of the extinct Kaiserstuhl volcano, which rises like an island from the Upper Rhine Plain between the Rhine and the Black Forest, create microclimatic conditions comparable to those of Burgundy and Alsace. Some of Germany's best Pinot Noir grapes grow on these slopes.
The Ihringen Wine Days have been held annually on the first weekend in June since 1979 — making 2026 the 48th edition. The organizer is Kaiserstuhl Touristik e.V., the regional tourism association, in cooperation with the Ihringen wineries and the municipal administration. Unlike many other wine festivals, the Ihringen Wine Days are not held in a central square but are spread across the historic courtyards and alleys of the town center — an atmosphere that makes the festival unique.
The 48th edition runs from Friday, June 5th (opening at 6 PM by the mayor) to Whit Monday, June 8th, 2026. Saturday's highlight is the Bavarian Frühschoppen starting at 10 AM, followed by the Vintner Olympics starting at 2:30 PM — a cheerful competition where Ihringen vintners compete in disciplines such as barrel-stabbing, vine parcours, and cork throwing. Sunday and Monday are dedicated to wine enjoyment in the courtyards — Ihringen vintners will be pouring their Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Müller-Thurgau, along with Swabian dishes (beef salad, Maultaschen, Spätzle), Kaiserstuhl specialties, and homemade cakes.
A special feature of the Ihringen Wine Days: Ihringen train station is located directly at the festival grounds — the Kaiserstuhlbahn (Freiburg–Breisach–Endingen line, S-Bahn lines S1/S11/S5) brings visitors right to the festival entrance. The night bus N41 also runs during the Wine Days at special rates (€5 per person). This public transport connection makes the wine festival a preferred destination for day-trippers from Freiburg and Switzerland — many visitors use the train instead of their cars.
The 48th Ihringen Wine Days 2026 will take place from Friday, June 5th, 2026, to Whit Monday, June 8th, 2026, in the town center of Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl. The organizer is Kaiserstuhl Touristik e.V. with the Ihringen vintners.
Unlike festivals held in a central square, the Wine Days are spread across the historic courtyards and alleys of the town center. In each courtyard, a vintner pours their wines, often accompanied by family or colleagues — an intimate and personal tasting atmosphere that makes the Ihringen format unique. Live bands and brass bands play on the stage in the market square.
