Located in the Paffendorf district, surrounded by a moat, with a historic castle complex dating back to the 12th century, the inner courtyard offers an extraordinary backdrop for the annual Christmas market – one of the longest Christmas markets in the Rhein-Erft district, running from October 29 to December 23, 2026.

The unusual market duration of almost two months (October 29 to December 23, 2026) makes the Paffendorf Castle Christmas Market an Advent destination that caters to early visitors (early November) and last-minute shoppers (just before Christmas Eve). The concept focuses not on a single weekend, but on continuous market days throughout the Advent weeks with special weekends featuring a dedicated program.

Crafts and Regional Culinary Delights

In the castle courtyard – protected by the historic castle walls – around 30-40 exhibitors present their wares: crafts from the Rhineland (wood carvings, ceramics, glassblowing, jewelry, textiles), regional culinary delights (Rhineland Advent specialties, bratwurst, potato pancakes, roasted almonds, gingerbread hearts), mulled wine and punch in various forms (classic, white mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle, non-alcoholic specialties). The atmosphere benefits from the relatively quiet location away from Bergheim's town center.

Advent Music and Event Program

On weekends, the castle Christmas market offers a music program: Advent choirs from local parishes, brass ensembles, guitar duos, classical trios. Local bands also perform on selected dates, adding contemporary sounds to the program. Special events such as readings, castle tours, and children's programs enrich the festive weeks. Paffendorf Castle – History and Atmosphere

Paffendorf moated castle has been part of the chain of historic noble estates along the Erft river since the 19th century. Today, it is owned by RWE Power AG (formerly RWE Rheinbraun) and is used as an event and representation venue. The castle complex with its moat, inner courtyard, historic walls, and baroque avenue offers a special atmosphere – especially during Advent, when fairy lights and Advent decorations highlight the historic substance.

Paffendorf Castle is located in the Paffendorf district of Bergheim, about 3 kilometers northeast of Bergheim's town center. Getting there by car via the A 61 (Bergheim-Süd exit), parking available in front of the castle. By public transport: Bus line 967 from Bergheim Hbf (Paffendorf Schloss stop). Approximately 35 minutes from Cologne, around 45 minutes from Aachen.
