Autumn wine festival of the Achkarren winemakers' cooperative
Achkarren is located on the western slope of the Kaiserstuhl, the volcanic low mountain range between the Black Forest and the Vosges — one of Germany's warmest and sunniest wine-growing regions. The Achkarren winemakers' cooperative, together with its members, cultivates the steep slopes around the village and primarily produces Burgundy wines: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc. During the Herbsthock on the first weekend of October, the cooperative opens its doors and turns its courtyard into a wine stage.
At the Herbsthock, you can sample the cooperative's current range: Dry Pinot Noirs with depth, mineral Pinot Gris, fresh Pinot Blancs, and occasionally Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. In the lounge bar, the team mixes wine cocktails — Hugo, Aperol Spritz, Spritzers with Burgundy sparkling wine — an idea that makes the 'Hock' format a bit more urban without losing the traditional atmosphere. Accompanied by Kaiserstuhl specialties: Flammkuchen, ham, cheese, and pumpkin variations.
A special feature of the Achkarrer Herbsthock: Tractor tours through the vineyards. Guests ride in towed trailers through the steep volcanic slopes, hearing stories from the vintner about the soil, climate, and vintage. The tours run multiple times on both days — register on-site. It's an opportunity to experience the wine region not only in the glass but also in its landscape.
The Kaiserstuhl is geologically an extinct volcano: Millions of years ago, lava rocks formed here, which today determine the unmistakable mineral character of the wines. Achkarren is one of nine districts of Vogtsburg am Kaiserstuhl, with almost 1,000 inhabitants, and almost every family is connected to viticulture. Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl belongs to the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district — the nearest larger city is Freiburg im Breisgau, about 30 km to the east.
The first weekend of October 2026 — October 3rd is German Unity Day, the 4th is a Sunday — is the Achkarrer Herbsthock. The winemakers' cooperative opens its courtyard and premises, sets up stalls, arranges the lounge, and organizes the tractor tours.
Both days start at 11:30 AM. Program highlights spread throughout the day: Opening with festival tasting, late afternoon lounge party, culinary wine evening (advance booking recommended).
Free admission. Wine tasting 0.1 l approx. €2–4, lounge cocktails €6–9. Food €5–15. Tractor tour contribution towards expenses (register on-site). Culinary wine evening is subject to a charge and requires advance booking.
By train (Breisach-Bahn) to Breisach, then by local bus to Achkarren. By car via the A 5 (exit Riegel or Bad Krozingen) and the L 113. Parking available on-site at the festival grounds.
