Town and culinary festival centered around the North Sea crab in the Storm city
Husum is the district capital of the North Frisian district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein – the "grey city by the sea" from Theodor Storm's famous poem and, for centuries, the most important harbor on the North Frisian west coast. Crab fishing is more than just an economic sector here: the North Sea crab (actually the North Sea shrimp, Crangon crangon) is an identifying feature of the entire region.
The Crab Days focus on the entire world of crab fishing and gastronomy around the harbor and market square:
The crab peeling championship holds a special significance: peeling the small crabs is a very artisanal activity that has been passed down through generations in the crab fishing households on the west coast. Whoever can peel a certain amount the fastest wins – and all spectators can then taste. This combination of competition, craftsmanship, and enjoyment is the soul of the festival.
The market square with its classicist town hall and the historic harbor district are the venues for the festival – both known from Theodor Storm's stories (The Schimmelreiter, Pole Poppenspäler). The Sunday with open shops also makes the Crab Days a shopping weekend for the entire North Frisian region.
On October 17 and 18, 2026, Husum will dedicate its harbor area to the North Sea crab. Hafenstraße, the harbor itself, and the historic market square will become a stage for enjoyment, craftsmanship, and tradition – around 60 exhibitors will gather.
Crab cutters will deliver directly from the ship, top chefs will present their cooking shows, and the crab peeling championship will crown the peeling champions. On Sunday, shops will be open – Husum's businesses will open from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, adding a shopping atmosphere to the crab festival.
