Test of courage and tradition: Jump into the wintry North Sea on January 1st
The New Year's Swim is a tradition in many North German coastal towns. Cuxhaven, with Duhnen beach, is one of the most prominent venues for this test of courage. What makes the event special: the interplay between a festive atmosphere, the raw beauty of the North Sea in January, and the exuberant mood of swimmers and spectators.
Duhnen beach, one of Cuxhaven's most famous beaches, provides the perfect backdrop. Located directly next to the modern ahoi Thalasso Centre, it offers expansive sandy areas and easy access to the water. At low tide, swimmers have to go a bit further out; at high tide, they get into the waves more quickly.
The supporting program begins at 9:00 AM: welcome speeches, music, hot drinks, and food stalls create a good atmosphere. Around 10:30 AM, the joint plunge into the North Sea water takes place. Those who wish to swim should register in advance – the event also offers opportunities to warm up after the short dip.
Those who prefer to stay away from the cold water can watch the spectacle from the beach promenades. Grilled sausages, mulled wine, tea, and coffee are offered, accompanied by music. The atmosphere is cheerful and festive – an ideal start to the new year for families and holidaymakers.
The New Year's Swim is part of a broader New Year's Eve program in Cuxhaven, which festively marks the transition into the new year with the Cuxhaven Winter Magic in the Döse spa park and New Year's Eve events in the beach hotels. For holidaymakers staying in Cuxhaven between the years, the swim is an absolute highlight.
The 2026 New Year's Swim continues a popular Cuxhaven tradition. The plunge into the North Sea on Duhnen beach is a test of courage for some, a welcome spectacle for others – and for everyone, an unforgettable start to the new year.
Fancy dress and creative swimwear are explicitly welcome and contribute to the cheerful atmosphere. Those who wish to participate in the swim should inquire with the organizer in advance and arrive at the venue in good time.
